I just bought the book, American Farm Tractors in the 1960's. In it, it states that John Deere built 4020's with factory power front-wheel assists. In the picture in the book, the tractor has a loader on it, so you can't see if it is a mechanical front wheel or hydraulically driven front wheel assist. I collect tractors with front wheel assist, I have one of all brands except Deere, because all the information I got was they were hydraulically driven and were put on at the dealerships as an aftermarket kit. If any of you Deere fans could shed some light on this, I would really appreciate it. Thank You.

Neighbor has 4020 w/FWA hyd assist. It also has a cab and a loader.According to serial number they only made 3 more 4020's after this one, and the last one never left Deere.

The I&T manual shows the FWA is hydraulic, with a motor and planetary drive in the wheel hubs. It mentions the main pump is larger for that. It doesn't look like it was much of an assist.

These were hydraulic driven units and I beleive that they required a larger capacity hyd. pump than the standard 4020 pump. They were similar to the units used on the 7700 and 6600 combines RWA.
