These tractors look pretty solid to me but I was wondering what you guys think. One that I looked at had loose steering, mower deck, 2 outlets out front and I am guessing a hydraulic deck lift becaus it had 3 hydraulic levers. How strong are these hydro trannies? I would like to use it for snowplowing, working the garden and other small utility work, probably not much mowing. What kind of hydraulic couplers are on the front?
Thanks

I have one of the last ones built , somewhere around 1974-5 model . Bought it in the late 70's , has the three hyd levers , it came with 46" mower , rear mount roto-tiller and front blade . I still have it and still use it . The 14hp Kohler has never been apart , original electric clutch and everything else . The only things replaced were the carburator and a couple sets of mower deck bearings also normal maintenance like belts etc .It looks tough , has several battle scars (kids learing to drive etc) but never fails to start and run . I bought a 318 several years ago , thinking of phasing out the old 140 but seems like I use the 140 more than the 318 , because it always runs . The 318 is nicer to run , little more power , power steering etc but LOT's more problems . Too many electrics , saftey's etc , most of which have been hot wired . When I want to mow I want to mow ! 318 has 1200hrs on it , don't know about the 140 but has to have double that and no problems . The place I get my mower parts says , just the other day when I was trying to figure out the 318 carburator , that the 140's were the best JD mower built .

My dad bought one new in 1970 and I bought it from him. The engine is the weakest link if they are used hard. Mine is on the third rebuild. I think the coil ignitions are better than the electronic ignitions. I changed mine to coil ignition. The transmission has never been a problem. I have the H3 (3 hydraulic levers) w/ turf tires, trailer, front blade, deck mower, tiller, plow, disc, and mid blade. It won't push much snow with the turf tires unless you chain it up. Good solid garden tractor to last that long.

I got one of these about a year ago in the same condition. I replaced the steering column, tie rod ends, hood, rebuilt the three mower spindles, belts, one trans pressure relief plunger that was leaking for about $700.00 with ebay, flea market, dealer parts. It is as solid as new and runs perfectly. The trans is a Sundstrand. They are widely used in many brands of tractors. Kept full and oil clean (filter change occasionally) they will hurt you way more than you could ever hurt them. Pretty much indestuctible. There are tons of attachments for these including loaders and three point hitches. Have fun.

Joe's advice is sound.

However, there are 2 completely different hydros, both Sundstrand. NO significant parts interchange between them

The change was at tractor serial # 30,000. The older units do NOT have the release valves that can leak, the newer ones DO.

(The older ones DO have a manual "T" handle release valve that can leak due to easily replaced, cheap "O" rings. The newer release valves are crimped together, and NOT repairable.)

Where are you located and what did you give for it if you want to tell? Overall the one that I looked at looked cosmetically like this one.
Thanks
