51 A Wiring Question

When we pulled the hood off the tractor last weekend we noticed two wires coming from the generator to the instrument panel on the tractor. The wires are white & brown or black (can't remember). Anyway the white wire was hooked up to one of the guages and the black wire was just hanging freely. Where does the black wire hook up at?

Thanks

Green, Unless it was modified, as happens, and IFFFFF FF there are 2 instead of only one wire running from your Voltage Regulator up to the Dash, you likely have a 4 pole (BAT FLD LOAD ARM) Voltage Regulator as opposed to a 3 pole VR (BAT ARM FLD) which has but one wire up to the dash.

If thats the case Mr. Browning is correct in that the one wire (white per the diagram) goes to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter (ammeters other terminal wires to the starter) while the other (black per the diagram) wire from the VR goes to the BAT input terminal on the Light switch, it serves as the hot voltage input for all loads like lights and ignition. Per the diagram the BAT input side of the light switch has another jumper wire that leads to the BAT input terminal on the Ignition switch.

Sooooo o if shes a 4 pole VR and hasnt been modified and there's 2 wires from the VR up to the dash, I agree one wire (white) goes to the ammeters load side terminal while the other wire (black) goes to the BAT input terminal to serve as the voltage feed for the lights and ignition switches. To answer your specific question, therefore, it looks like the one wire (white)thats already connrected is to the ammeter while the black one wires to the light switches input terminal which also has another jumper wire over to the ignition switch.

On the 4 pole VR system all loads are fed from the VR's LOAD terminal but on three 3 wire VR system that doesnt have that 4th L terminal, loads are fed off the ammeters load side terminal.

Hope this helps, post back your findings n any questions n we will be glad to try n help

Mean Green -- I forgot completely to provide an answer to your basic quesiton - - - Of the wire pair running from front to back under the hood,

(1) The white wire (probably 10 AWG) runs between the ammeter (-) and Regulator Battery (B) terminal, and

(2) The black wire (probably 14 AWG) runs between the Regulator "L" terminal and the light switch. (PatB)

It appears you are in need of a wiring diagram. Look at pages 44 - 47 of your PC675 Parts Catalog.

And if you do not have the manuals for your tractor, I strongly urge you to not work on it until you do have them! Call 800-522-7448 (Deere Pubs) for PC675 Part Catalog and OMR 2002 Operators Manual. You can find JD-4 (I&T) Shop Service Manual at your local dealer, on eBay, lots of places. Good investments!

Now, if you are in dire need of a wiring diagram before all this, e-mail me and ask for the diagram. Mention 1951 JD-A so I don't mix you up with someone else. (PatB)
