2950 tach doesn't work

The tachometer on my 2950 w/ cab just up and died recently. It isn't a problem except when I am baling hay. My baler cuts the twine nearly perfectly when the tractor is at 2000 rpm, doesn't cut it well at all at 1900 or less.

I took the dash off to hopefully find a tach cable that needed replacing and WOW did I find a great deal of wiring and no tach cable. I was hoping also to find a loose ground wire but couldn't even find a green wire that looked like it fit the bill. The rest of the dash functions are working (fuel guage, temp guage and idiot lights)

Is it possible to fix the tach without replacing some crazy circuit board?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Solder joints on the PC board the tach attaches to are known to fail. There's a lot of stuff to remove to get to the board, once you get to it, touching up the solder joints is realtively easy.

The tachometer has a magnetic pickup (engine speed sensor) that works off of the front of the crankshaft. It is possible that it has gone bad. (Only $30.) The technical manual says it should be sending .8 volts AC at a slow idle. No voltage means it is bad. It is located on the right front of the engine, facing the engine. The wire should run over to the wiring harness and connect close to the alternator. Carefully check all the connections between the sender and the tachometer. If you are getting voltage up to the tachometer then be prepared to shell out a little over $400 for the assembly(the only way it comes, according to my Deere dealer). Hope this helps you.
