I obviously have an 8n, and i am looking for another antique tractor perhaps slightly larger, however it must be diesel. I believe the 435 due to its seeming rarity, is well out of my price range. I have also heard that the 1010 was considered one of the worst deeres. But it seems to be the size i can most use, perhaps the 1020 or 1520.

What do you all think? What would be a good price too, for an unrestored/ but running model?

My Father paid $6000 for a 1530 D with 2 SCV's, taller 38 inch rear tires, low hours, cast weights front and rear, everything works, and a good New Idea loader. It is in very good condition but not restored.

The 1010/2010 were not Deere's best offerings, they had the infamous "sleeve-and-deck" cylinder configuration that was vulnerable to lower cylinder seal leakage in the Diesel incarnations and expensive to fix. But as they say, there were some good ones, and chances are that any that have survived until now in runnable form are most likely one of the good ones. That said, the 820/830 (late 60's three -cylinder models) 1020/1120/1520/2020's would be an excellent choice but they could be pricey since they were/are popular, durable and very useful. The least you could spend for a small Diesel in any kind of runnable shape would be around 4K, I'd budget in the 4 to 6K for a tractor in your size range. The absolute very best Diesel in the 36-40 HP range ever made is the Massey 135 but these are very hard to find now becasue those lucky enough to have one keep it. But the Deere 820/830/1120/1520/2020 are almost as good and very easy to get parts and serice for. just my $0.02, good luck and have fun.

Any 20 or later series Deere diesel is fine as long as the antifreeze isn't decades old and lost it's corrosion inhibiter. Same for any wet sleeve engine of any make. The combo hydraulic/trans lube used by just about every manufacture for the past 40+ years. Must be wet clutch compatable or $$$.
