420U For Mowing

Just purchased a nice 420U for mowing with sickle bar and 5ft. brush hog after reading on discussion board about how good the 420 was for light mowing.
But the JD manual on the page listing what implements you can use with the tractor says that you can not use the 420U with a "rear mounted mower". Does this mean a sickle bar mower, a brush hog or a flail mower cannot be used?
I hitched up the brush hog today and it worked real slick so don't understand what the problem is.
Can anyone offer suggestions?

If I were using a rear finish or bushog I would be sure to use an overiding clutch on the pto shaft plus a slip clutch on the mower gear box. Those transmission have a light cluster gear and one good lick could cause a major problem. From memory it seems that highway departments used a side mounted sickle mower on these tractors, not sure how a rear mounted sickle would work, one would need to be concerned about tip weight of mower.

I have a 430 U which should be about the same. I have mowed a lot of hay with a 7 foot #8W mower. It works fine. Have also used it with a 5 foot rotary mower. I would suggest getting an over running clutch for the PTO with the brush hog or you can't shift gears. My uncle used a ford 3 point mower on this tractor also and I have seen a number of them with #9 JD mowers. I don't understand why it would be a problem.

I have a '58 420 that I use weekly for mowing my 7.6 acre yard. I use a 72" Bushog brand finish mower. I does a very nice job. Gives the kids a good place to play and don't have to worry much about the snakes or ticks from taller grass. I also use a 5' bushog behind it from time to time. Only disadvantage is not having live power. As long as your brakes are good you shouldn't have much trouble. You may want to look at getting a slip clutch for the pto shaft. Good luck, Jason.

Jonathan,

The 420U owner's manual was printed before the advent of the rear mount rotary or flail mower. The manual is referring to the use of a rear sickle bar designed for the 420S which probably would have been positioned too close to the rear tires which are set rearward from those on the 420S.

Responses give me courage to continue mowing. I'll set the slip clutch on the rotary cutter for a 20 hp engine so I should be safe.

Makes sense that instructions were written well before we have our modern bush hog type devices. Yes I noticed the wheels are set back farther by the backwards trailing reduction gears - never saw that setup before - only vertical.
