Guys,

I need some help quick. I have a 1944 B John Deere that I bought and missing the Magneto. I am looking at one but need to know pretty quick two things. 1) it originally had a model C 1042 mag. This one is an XH 1042. will they interchange? 2) Is the rotation clockwise, or counterclockwise? This one is a CCW? Please let me know quick, i'm afraid i'm going to lose it.

jg

jg, I certainly agree with Maark and JD YESSSSS it will interchange and work provided its the same drive lug length (like the short versus long reach they referred to) which you can easily tell by comparing them side by side and looking at the drive cups and how deep the two male cogs are (how far from back of mag where it mates with governor housing) that fit into the open female slot in the end of the governors shaft. If you try n use a long lug drive cup where a short should be it wont fit correct into the governor housing, but if you use a short where a long is required, it wont seat into the governors open slot to ever turn the mag. Just get it in basic time or else she will pop n bang n backfire and/or kick the flywheel backwards something awful which a top n bottom plug wire reversal would cure. They were originally top plug tower to the left cylinder and bottom to the right but if the mags installed 180 out into the governors female slot (fits either way) she could be made to run by reinstalling it 180 different or else swap plug wires as noted before. Then get the impulse start timing and run timing correct and youre good to go.

Duane or Glen can post a nice pic showing the different drive cup dimensions, Im not smart enough.

Yes the Mag (drive cup etc) turns CCW facing the back of the mag. The governor shaft turns the same direction and RPM as the crankshaft.

I also prefer the later X Model for its bearing (versus a C bushing), possibly more spark energy, good parts availability and its still Correct Police correct

They will interchange. Just make sure it has the short drive lugs.

As long as the X mag has the short lug impulse, it will work. In my opinion the Wico model X is a better mag anyway. CCW rotation.
