Recently purchased a late 1954 Model 60 John Deere. I have some previous knowledge of old Deere's, but I have run into a problem I can't figure out. Tractor didn't run when I bought it. Cleaned the rotor, cap, and point contacts. All replaced before I bought it and appear new. Both plugs have good spark. The tractor cranked after cleaning the cap and rotor, but ran smooth for a minute and then almost died and then ran smooth, so on and so forth. I could unplug the flywheel side plug wire and it didn't affect the running at all. I broke down the carb. and cleaned it thoroughly. Fuel bowl (sight glass) was also cleaned top to bottom. Tractor still presented with the same problem as before. Takes a while to start it and then runs horribly. Know it will not even start. Could it be a timing problem. The previous owner claimed it ran before he parked it, so I don't really think the timing could be off. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I also have a model 60 and had a similiar problem. I found the fuel line from the gas tank to the glass bowl was plugged with sediment. I unscrewed the bowl assembly from the tank and blew it out from below the tank (after draining the tank) and now it runs like a top. Check it out!

You may have plugged passage ways in the carb, poor fuel flow, bad carb float, plugged air cleaner (mud dauber, dirt & grease from 60 years) ?? Try running it with the air cleaner loose. Are the plugs black and sooted or clean or wet fouled? Operators manual or a I&T manual will tell you how to check the timing.

Yeah the I&T manual is my next option. The plugs have been mainly black and sooty. The intake has good pressure when the engine is trying to start, but I figures I might have to really check it and go over the carb again anyway. I feel pretty confident I cleaned every possible nook and cranny in the carb, but I will go over it again. it's a pretty safe bet since the tractor had been sitting up for a while befroe I bought it. Heck, it only cost 500 and it looks great. Just need to make it run. Thanks so much for the help.

Did you see the post, several posts down, about the 50 only running on one? There's good suggestions there.
