Hello Everyone-

I need some help with an ignition switch for a 1946 John Deere A. This tractor has magneto ignition. The tractor was purchased for me by my Uncle and is currently in Florida. I have not actually seen the tractor with my own 2 eyes but I"m trying to help my uncle get a few parts, and needless to say it has been "challenging" He tells me he needs an ignition switch and that it is a "lever switch",and that it controls the lights and magneto, and is not not a push pull type. I really have no idea what he means. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to provide me with some insight and send me some pictures? I"d actually like to purchase a switch if that"s possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

Your uncle is remembering the lever combination igntion/light switch from another later tractor like a number series 50,60,70,620,730 etc... They didn't use a rotary switch on any A to my knowledge nor is it in parts catalog for A. Someone else might have once wired a A with a rotary switch like that however? Don't be hooking the magneto to a battery ignition switch either unless it is a special switch made with a separate circuit magneto grounding shut off lug. A magneto does NOT need battery voltage power of any type and doing so will ruin and fry the mag! If magneto doesn't have a kill terminal on it that can be added if wanted for a stop button kill with a button shut off or wired to a seperate grounding kill switch for safety or emergencies but they didn't come that way originally and JD recommended to just shut the fuel off and run it out of fuel. If it has a battery distributor ignition on it like the Delco or even the Wico XB dist. then you need a on/off ignition switch, push/pull or toggle of some type inline for battery wire going to distributor.

Perhaps he means a toggle switch.

Send an email to [email protected]. Melanie will help you figure out what you need. You can find their website at oldjd4u dot com. Mag ignitions normally relied on fuel shutoff through throttle linkage to kill them. Maybe Unk has something else in mind?

Joe,
That's a tough one. That series tractor did not have an "off" (ground) switch for the magneto. It did have a multiple-position pull switch which controls the lights and charge-rate of the generator. Your uncle has something in mind not in the JD parts book for your A so it's hard to know. Speaking of parts books, you should order one - call 1-800-522-7478 and tell them what you have - and order an owners manual and parts book for your A. There was no service manual published for the A - your best bet is an Implement and Tractor Service Manual JD-4, available on this site - see the top of the left hand column for manuals and go near the end of the Deere listing.
