Just wanted to introduce myself. Just bought a 1944 B. This is my first Poppin' John and my first personal tractor resto. Have had a hand in several, but mostly cosmetic. This one was a steal but needs lots of TLC. It is missing the magneto and carb, and the engine is stuck. All the tin is great and beyond what is listed above, complete.

Mainly wanted to introduce myself and ask if anyone has any advice that may save a world of headaches, I am very open to them.

I will be keeping track of the resto on my website. I will post the link later.

Thanks for all the advice, warm greetings, and help. I have already ordered the I&T manual, am good friends with the John Deere dealership down the road from me, and ebay is the second thing that opens on my computer. In fact, that is where the tractor came from. looking forward to getting into it and getting her popping again. thanks.

Hi Aggie jon.

A great place to find parts you will need is ebay. You can come across some good deals if you watch closely. This site is a good place for parts also. And the information you can get here is top notch. I have a 1940 B and have relied on this site for info on several occasions.

Welcome Jon, Several vendors sell a I&T (Primedia) JD-4 shop manual that covers the JD A,B,D,G,H,M, & MT tractors for about $25-30. The B operators manual or SM2004 Service manual for B or parts catalog for B is available on paper or CD from JD publications. They also combine them all on 1 or 2 CDs if you ask. Be aware that the SM2000 is not a complete service manual but one that just covers basic fundamentals and electrical and go for the other manuals first. You'll find several advertisers or carbs and mags in ads or magazines.... greenmagazine.com or twocylinder.com Enjoy it and have fun!

Hi aggie Jon - You picked the right website to get the good information from. There are a lot of excellent sources of information here.

Advice - Immediately purchase the John Deere Parts Manual for your tractor. Buying the Service Manual and all the available supporting manuals is a plus as well. The phone number is 800-522-7448 for John Deere Archives.

Warning - If you restore your tractor properly, and value your time at zero, you will still most likely have twice as much invested in it as it will be worth, for at least the near future.

End result - This hobby will present to you, a very rewarding learning experience, as well as a good look into the past. You will find that many stories are true, and that many tales are simply myths. Hope you enjoy it!

With a stuck engine what I would do even if you plan to rebuild it, is to blow the cylinders out with air and then fill them with tranny fluid. You might get lucky to have it pop loose which will save you a lot of work. I have a 1935 JD-B pictured in the web site. It was locked up for 15 plus years and I popped it loose useing tranny fluid and turpentine and its still got the same rings in it that have been in it since my grandfather used it on his farm way back when.

Is it a hand start or does it have a starter on it?? My B doesn't have a starter so I made a wrench that fit in the flywheel holes so I could put some real torque on it to free up the engine. It was about 10 foot long and the first time I tried it when in minutes it was freed up. By the way with out a carb or mag you will be spenind a good bit of money to get it up and running. I had to replace the carb and mag on my B and it cost me around $750 for the 2 of them but I also got ones from places with a warrenty

It is a hand start. i don't think it will be too difficult to get it freed up. i'm working on getting the carb and mag. i think i have the mag located. the quest continues for the carb.
