HAVE A JOHN DEERE A SERIAL #497082 ,THE MANETO DOES NOT SEEM TO FIT RIGHT UP TIGHT TO MOUNTING FLANGE, IT IS SPACED ABOUT 1/8" AWAY FROM FITTING UP TIGHT. THE MAGNETO IS A WICO XH1042 ,IS THIS THE CORRECT MAG FOR THIS TRACTOR? IF THIS IS RIGHT MAGNETO WHAT WOULD I LOOK FOR TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM?

If you are only about 1/8" away I think the long lug short lug differance is alot more than that. Grab ahold of the coupling and shaft up in the gov. housing and see if it has play up and down or back and forth. There's a really good chance the bearings are bad letting it move over too far. You might also want to take a ruler and measure the distance from the flange to the coupling on the gov. and mag. both to see how it subtracts out. Also make sure you put a gasket on there as they may be about 1/16"

Al,
It sounds like you have a long lug drive coupler on your magneto, and you need a short lug coupler. Check this link drive couplers for a pix of the difference. The couplers are interchangeable so you just need to fine one - either a 2061B or 6274 would work, and these numbers are stamped on the couplers.

My neighbor had the same thing with his A. What ever you do don't try to force the mag up tight with the bolts ! It will crack the mag housing. He did. Snug up the mag and loosen the cover on the other side of the Gov. The whole shaft is spring loaded. Now tighten up the mag and then re - tighten the cover on the Gov. If it still won't go then it might be a short lug or long lug issue on the mag. Just don't force it.
This worked for the neighbor. Good luck

Marty; You NEVER want to have a mag. or dist. installed while you are trying to draw up the bolts on the L.H. gov. housing. This is usually what busts them because as the shaft goes in it also rotates because of the cam gear has beveled teeth then it can't mesh up with the mag. or dist. anymore.

I agree with NOT drawing it up like that! If it doesn't fit flush with one gasket STOP and see what is wrong if you have wrong drive cup or governor is worn out. Usually governor is worn and/or snap rings gone on governor shaft or keys worn out for the mag drive coupling or worn bearnings not shimmed right. You sure don't pull the governor loose and put that pressure of the spring in there on the mag. That spring pressure is for the governor thrust type bearings to help hold the clearances for the angle drive fan gears and it uses gasket shims thick and thin to adjust. It should actually have a tad bit of gap between mag drive and governor drive and not be tight because that causes wear and heat on the mag bearings making them too tight and will just wear the mag out faster if you don't break it first. If not fixing the governor yet and you do have the right drive cup the BEST thing to do is use more mag flange gaskets to shim the mag out before you break it. That's why I put at least 2 gaskets with every mag repair that goes out and ask commercial or irrigation customers if they need more gaskets. Lubbock Gasket makes a hard flange gasket we have been using for years on MM engines to shim the mag out when needed. Short lug drive cups are 6274 - 25 deg., 2061B - 30 deg., 3565 - 35 deg. and Long lug cups 3744 - 35 deg. & 7596 - 25 deg.
