Greetings from New Hampshire. I have a 1997 855 which will not start. It is a 4wd HydroStatic Trans and has always run great. I used it the day before to cut some fields with a rotary cutter. It ran great. It now won't turn over at all. I turn the key and all I get is a single click. Lights all work, battery is fully charged and only a year old. PTO levers all seem to be in the correct spot. I'm stumped..I wonder if there is some type of safety mechanism engaged preventing start up.
Please help!

Many Thanks,
-Jon

Move all your levers that might have safety switches...engage pto then disengage, change speed ranges, then back to neutral etc...some saftey switch isn't being switched.

My FIL NH TC 30 has done that a time or two.

my wifes jeep wouldn't start and the lights would work, horn, everything, but it wouldn't crank. dead battery. borrow one and see if that helps.

I have an 855, and yup, there are several safety switches to watch for. Since the starter will not engage, two switches come to mind as possible culprits.

The first one is actually on the forward/reverse pedals. While holding the key, push one pedal slowly down a bit, and then the other and see if you can't find the spot where the pedals are sort of centered and the switch reacts. If I shut mine off while coming to a stop, sometimes one pedal is left forward of the other and the system sees that as an open.

The second you mentioned, but it's worth a check is the PTO lever is fully aft switch. Engine will not spin if the PTO is engaged.

Third is a bad key switch. I have replaced one on mine in 10 years.

I"ve got a JD 4400 and experience the same thing. I would check connection to starting circuit, even consider some gel on the connections. You should be able to jump the solenoid post on the starter to actually check the starter. I would suggest using some aligator clips and wire. I"ve had a couple of the 755"s and there are saftey switches every where. As I recall there is a seat switch, neutral switch. Just sounds like your starting system isn"t activating the starter solenoid. Maybe if you ran it hard some sore of heat fatique to wiring?
