I am looking at buying a 1945 A.I think it has the wrong seat assembly on it.It has a square seat type with a backrest??Should it have the pan seat?
Thanks Gary

Dad's '47 slantdash came with a square seat and backrest. Padded seat had a zipper at the back to access an extension to an inner tube about the size used on a No 5 mower. I have seen illustrations of a similar seat used on a D with a dual PTO pulling a Cat grader. The remains of the upholstery and the steel frame still hang in the back end of the grainery. I installed it N times, and Dad installed a purchased pan seat (N + 1) times. The steel rod supporting the backrest was distinctly unconfortable when plowing in the sidehills of SW WI.

Albertagary -- Your are precisely correct. The pan seat was used throughout all the early styled tractors. The new design with the square box type seat (also housed battery) came in along with the pressed steel side support for 1947 production, A-584000 and up.

And if you do buy this tractor, seek all the manuals along with it that you can get. You need ORM2000 Operators Manual, PC675 Parts Catalog and an I&T (JD-4) Shop Service Manual published by Primedia, Inc. Deere pubs can be purchased by calling them (800) 522-7448 -- they will have the first two (hard copy and/or CD) & may have the JD-4. Your local JD dealer (Ag) may also have it -- and it is also on eBay nearly all the time.

Beware of anyone telling you that SM2000 is the service manual for you. It is a specialty manual dealing with tooling, JD engine valves, carburetion and electrical systems - no more. As I told another fellow, if you want to buy a specialty book, buy mine. It will serve you better -- I gaurantee it! (PatB)
