I posted here a while back. I have gone in a few direction since then. I was looking at a grey market tractor/backhoe set up for $10,000 which is more than I want to spend. I am still considering this unit. I will post several pictures so please check them out and let me know what you think. I know nothing about tractors, never been on one. I just want to get one to do some work around my house. I am pretty good with a wrench though. (not great, just good) I thought it might be better to get some old American iron rather than some new Chinese tin. (even is the old stuff needs some work?) The guys wants $5000 for this, he had this to say about it when I emailed him:

As for the operation of the front loader it work as it is supposed to. It is not slow at all and picks the front of the tractor up with no problem and the pins and bushings are tight. The backhoe works just as well, not slow at all and it can also pick up the back of the tractor with no problem. There are a few leaks here and there but nothing that is gushing or spitting really bad they are just very minor, but what can you expect from a tractor that is almost fifety years old.

The ad said: 1960 John Deere 1010 industrial tractor with front loader and backhoe. Everything works. 36hp gas motor fires everytime. Rear tires are potassium filled. Backhoe has hydraulic outriggers and an 1' and 2' buckets

Forget that old junk. it's bound to be a money pit. I just sold a real good Ford 555 B with low hours (under 4,000) made in 1988 for only $11,000 and that's about what they sell for. you may find a good older 555 model for $8-$9K The newer the machine for the money the better off you are going to be.

How much do you want to gamble? in reply to aquaelvis, 07-21-2006 19:08:15
Go see the tractor! If what the guy described is in fact the way it is, the price is probably not bad. But don't take his word for it. Have him demonstrate it to you. If he can't show you each function, it doesn't count! And listen! Does it howl, rattle or make other strange noises? Pay attention and you won't get burned. If you don't see it first, you would be doing what my dad used to call buying "a pig in a poke." In other words, you would know there was something in the bag, but WHAT could be another question altogether.
