I have a john deere 3020 with 24 volt system which I would like to change to 12 volt. Besides the generator and starter(24 to 12 volt)what else do I need and how do I go about it?

You can still use the two 12 volt batteries in the tractor now, but you will need to install cables from each battery's negative post to the transmission case on the tractor.(the tractor will be negative ground after the conversion). You will then run a cable from each battery's positive post to the starter selinoid, thus running the 2 12 volt batteries in a parallel circuit. There is a resister under the GEN light on the dash, you need to remove this and install a jumper wire in its place, it's no longer needed with the 12 volt system. As for the alternator and starter, you can pick these up fairly cheap at a salvage yard or auto parts store, but I would highly recommend buying the conversion kit from John Deere. I have installed several of these and they make the job straight forward and simple with the detailed instructions included and you'll get a starter and alternator with a warranty, as well as the misc. wiring harness pieces included and new cables.

The fuel gauge may not work correctly after the change of system ground polarity.
