Help please: How tight can I make a taperlock on a JD 730 Diesel flywheel? It has a 4.5 inch square fine thread nut. When I tighten it with my biggest pipewrench, it comes lose in about 30 seconds of running. I am going to make a square socket with a welded on pipe with a crowbar through the pipe. Can I go up to about 1200 ft pounds? It doesn"t move forward or reverse, it slides partway off the crankshaft. Can I drill and thread the crankshaft and put a 5/8 inch bolt with a large homemade washer to hold it on where it belongs? Anyone have any experience here? Thanks.

I would imagine that drilling a hole in the center of the crank wouldn't hurt anything but it might be darn hard drilling?? Check it with a file to see before wasting a good drill bit. I've never used taperlocks and hope to never have to. We'll see when I get the flywheel back on the 720D. The splines look good...cross my fingers and tighten those bolts!

Just brute force tightening won't hold them on. You need to go a little at a time until they won't go anymore. Tighten it up ,then take a BIG sledge and hit it hard in the heavy web area ONLY ONCE then retighten repeat this proceedure until you can't get the nut to move anymore after a hit. It is now tight enough to run then recheck it for tightness after running awhile and it should hold. I always put a little never-sez on the taper part ,but not the crank. Also make sure your end play is set right. .005"-.010"

This is what I did with my 70 gas. Worked great. I had to use a long cheater bar to get mine tight enough. I have plowed and pulled with numurous times since i put it on and its still on tight.

Yes, I have the same experience as yours. I am waiting now for a new hub from Allen Machine Works and I am going to make a long wrench for that square nut. I did use a JD stake nut lock tited on the crank to keep it on. It is $40 at JD!
