I am thining about getting a tractor to help clear some of my land. I have never used one before and only have a few acres. I need to get some trees down and moved and a good amount of dirt hauled off. (as well and misc landscape type stuff)
I came across this one. (see pic) It is a 1960 John Deere 1010 industrial tractor with front loader and backhoe. The ad says, Everything works. 36hp gas motor fires everytime. Rear tires are potassium filled. Backhoe has hydraulic outriggers and an 1' and 2' buckets.

So I guess my questions are, what is this worth? Are these hard to keep running, etc. Is it a good unit for what I am looking to do? Is there anything I should be watching out for? (keep in mind, I have never owned or used a tractor)
Any help would be great. Thanks!

some of the time buying used backhoes are like buying boat anchors. Pins, hydraulic lines, pumps are the key. While it may be able to be used, is it really functional. A piece of equipment like this you"re taking a saftey risk. Personally I would put my money on something late model, more functional, higher resale value.

Aquaelvis:

The 8N or 9N price sounds correct, just remember you generally get what you pay for.

As for the 1980, 310 for $8000 or the 1960, 1010 for $5000 again; "if" all the fluids are good and no major leaks or welds and "if" it runs good, with no smoke or blowby either one is probably fairly priced.

They may be fairly well in line with current prices if it does work well. My opinion, if you know nothing about tractors and have that much work to do, I would go with the 300 diesel. When you are done you can sell it again if you want. The 1010 just isn't going to have much power and be very slow.

I must admit, this is not as cool looking at the older one, and it is more money but would it be a better deal? 1980 John Deere Backhoe 310-B....3-cylinder diesel.... 1 yard loader, Two buckets 12" trenching & 24" digging bucket. Enclosed cab, 2 wheel drive. Includes all manuals. Digs good. Runs great and starts easy. $7999 OBO.

Aquaelvis:

For what its worth, I was raised on a farm with tractors & equipment, which always needs mainentance and repairs. I currently have a 1965 John Deere 1010RU, a 41year old tractor which had been neglected. However old & used in not always a bad thing.

That being said, does it leak anywhere, if so how bad. Check all the fluids front to back, including the tire rims. Are there in weld repairs to the tractor, loader or backhoe?

Since this stuff is sorta new to you, I would strongly suggest to find a friend who knows alot about this type of equipment and have him look it over. If you buy it, he might also teach you how to maintain and run it.

Although 36hp is not a lot for this type of equipment, it will still do big jobs in a slower manner.

In summary, since you didn't say what the asking price was, I wouldn't know if its a good deal or not. However, even if I knew the price without actually seeing it, I still wouldn't know unless it was a utter steal.

Hope this somehow helps,

Osage

What is the owner asking for the machine?

He is asking $5000. I have seen some pretty clean 8 and 9N's around with front loaders for $1500-$3000. That is the going rate around here for those. I don't see many with a backhoe so I was not sure about the value. I can get a clean 8 or 9N without any attachments (just a 3 point, PTO) for $1000-$1500
