What is a good price for a 4020. I'm going to an auction and they have a 1970 4020 with PS trans and side console. It has 12,000 hours on it but I talked to the owner and he said it was completely overhauled (his son works at a JD dealership if that adds and merit) 400 hours ago and repainted. I don't remember all the details but he said it had a new cam, hydraullic pump and numerous other parts were replaced. He said the tires were fair. I haven't seen the tractor yet.

With these sketchy details what would be a reasonable price for this tractor.

I purchased a JD 4020 diesel w/side controls, & a front-end loader for $9700.00. After a few months it required a major engine overhall, at just a tad over $4300.00. Since then, I lost cattle lease and this tractor is up for sale for $12,000.00. The tractor is located in Joshua, Texas, Interested parties can contact me at 817-558-7767.

Was at a auction didnt pay attition if the 4020 had side controls or not but here is my point.Diesel engine with papers from a dealership showing $13000 in repairs. It brought $9000 and I dont know if it was bid back or they let it go.Cheapest one I have ever seen was $3500 for gas and narrow front(dont know why so cheap should of bought)and highest was $11000 so be prepared, new tractor arnt cheap make the good old ones look really good.

One of my customers has a 4020 that does a lot work on an irrigation pump plus maybe some spreader work in off season. They say it has over 20000 hrs on original block and the head was off once. And that's their story and they're stickin to it! Mike

I forgot to mention the tractor has a diesel engine. Plus the owner said this is the first time it has been overhauled.

You don't mention what type of engine the tractor has, but the local dealer says they will generally have to pay 6K for any 4020 diesel reasonably complete that will drive onto and off a trailer. They will sell after paint and a going over at 9-10K, with the side controls preferred, but not necessary. Major work to the tractor will add to the 9-10k price, at essentially a dollar for dollar rate. Those are dealer prices, with no guarantees on the tractor, but with a reasonable expectation that everyting should work for awhile.

The most abused ugley looking tractor that I had ever seen on a lot was a 4020 for sale ouside of St. Clairsville Oh. Even in a rusted no paint, bald tire, running, but smoking terrible condition, the man didn't blink an eye when he stated that he wanted 5700 for it. In decent shape expect to pay 8k and up. I purchased a 66 model with a gasoline engine, 4 new tires, and great metal , with 4435 hours on it for 5500. However after an overhaul, and a new seat, and odds and ends other things, I have around 7800 in it. I'm not complaining at all though. I saw a gas in similar shape sell for 8,000 recently. I feel confident that Afer I put a new coat of paint on it, that I'll never loose money on it. That's what's nice about the 4020. They seem to be a highly useful investment. Greg H.

Side console and PS probably will start at over $9000 in any condition. That recent overhaul and paint will push it out of sight, almost to a buck an hour on the tachometer, if its diesel. A couple thousand less if gas. That's not reasonable, but it will get it. I bought a '68 gas (one remote, rotten tires) for $5250 last year from a dealer/auctioneer. The tach says 5000 hours, but its been apart (wrench marks on every bolt of the engine) and doesn't use oil. I had to completely tune the ignition and fuel systems last year with lots of new parts, and work over the charging system this year. Look at the generator or alternator pulley. Mine was worn until the sides were parallel. Didn't charge well under those conditions.
