JD M10 tractor - convert to 12Volt system!!!!

Hi Everyone,

I am posting for an elderly neighbour who doesn't have the benifits of an intenet connection.

He would like to convert his M10 tractor from 6V to 12V. Has anyone done this? Any idea how much work is involved and how costly a job it would be. The neighbour is 70 yrs old and on a fixed income, so his choices would be pretty limited. Is there an article in the archives on this - I found one for the old Ford tractors. I guess we could use this as a guide and where Ford parts would be used, try to get JD stuff.

Anyway, if someone can help with this project it would be greatly appreciated.

Why does he want to covert? I usually find that it is just as cheap or cheaper to track down your problem with the 6V. Plus you will hurt resale value if you convert. You probably can sell 6V stuff to help pay for 12V stuff but when most people look to buy a tractor that has been converted the first question they have is "Do you have the 6V stuff that was originally on the tractor?" When you say M10 do you mean a standard M or maybe a MI? In the case of a MI I would DEFINATLY NOT CONVERT!!!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies so far.

I spoke with the neighbour and the tractor is a 1950 JD M model, two cylinder gas engine and yes, I had the model wrong. He has been having some electrical problems and thought going to 12V might help solve them. I doubt it and checked his battery yesterday - only one cell any good, so a new battery is needed before we go anywhere on this.

Also, checking the regulator I noticed only two wires going to it instead of the usual three. Is this an odd ball voltage regulator. We took it off and looked inside and it seems fine.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this tractor?

Once the tractor starts it runs fine and it is in excellent condition mechanically and is all original.

Again, any information would be a great help as no one seems to know much about this model in the area where we live.
