I was told that someone makes a complete kit to convert an 830 to electric start from pony motor start. Does anyone know who makes it? Thanks.

Thanks for the info, folks! Much appreciated. Yes, my pony money is worn out. Still runs, but smokes and slobbers all over the place. And i dread the cost of overhauling it. So, thought I would look at an electric start. That said, I would definitely hold on to the pony so I could return the tractor to original for resale. Well, wish me luck!

Check out T.H.E Company as they sell a coversion bracket and starter for a 720 and maybe it can be modified to an 830.

I have an 80 electric start. Fashioned my own bracket from 3/8" plate to resemble the factory bracket for the 830/840. Bolts to the same holes as the pony. Used a 12V starter for a 290 Cummins. Most any 3 bolt large diesel engine starter can be made to work. A decent starter shop can help you find the right bendix. For the purist, the pony would have consumed $2,000 worth of parts and is now resting comfortably soaked in oil in a big plastic box on a shelf in the shop. The 80 will start in 40 degree weather in a couple of revs on full compression with one battery. I can't think of any good reason to use the tractor in weather colder.

A 12V MT42 or a MT50 will make a about 7.5KW running at 1400amps. The MT50 on 24V will make 9.0KW and draw 1000amps. Needless to say scrimping on cables or batteries will cost you cranking power. Even a MT50 on 24V however can't match the cranking rpms a 10.45 KW cranking engine makes. Cranks longer than batteries too. I remember as a kid the cranking engine on the 70D in sub zero weather had to roll the engine on decompression for a minute before it could handle the compression load. Took about that long cranking to get oil pressure anyaways. In warm weather electric start operates ok if sized and installed correctly.

If your pony runs good IMHO you are crazy to change to electric. I've owned a 720D and 730DES and I liked the pony much better. Plus It's a cool little motor and kind of unusual. I'm guessing yours doesn't run good or you wouldn't want to do this.

Keep all the cranking engine parts safe and dry in a well labeled box. Everbody in the family should know where it is. I've went to purchase tractors and cut the offered price by thousands becasue the cranking engine, pto shield, fenders and three point hitch were missing. Grandpa had taken pieces off at differnet times during the years and left the parts here and there to get lost or rust. The family selling the tractor just couldn't understand how these parts could be required, cost so much to replace and the tractor "ran out good" without them. 12V or 24V conversion? How large of starter, cables & batteries? Temperatures where the tractor maybe started at?
