We've been offered a 3130 JD (suppose to be a '74 model) tractor. There's a problem in the trans. with the high/low shift. Something happened to it while mowing. The guy says whatever is wrong with it, the unit that controls shifting from hi to lo is "swollen" up. I went and looked at it this afternoon and I can't see any physical damage to the outside of the trans. case but the shifter sticks are taken loose so what he may be talking about may be down inside. With this minimal info, can anyone tell me what is wrong? He was quoted an astronomical price, $3,100 by a shop with a questionable reputation for just the part, so that's as far as it went fixing it. We work on all sorts of heavy equipment, trucks, and other makes of tractors, so I thought about giving it a go. The rest of the tractor looks excellent. It has a top, new tires on the front and the sheet metal is like new. He said he'd like to get $1,500 but we may trade him something in on it I can determine it can be fixed. Can anyone help?

Rocky

I would go for it,that tractor should be worth $2-3000+ in a pile just for parts. The hi lo hard parts should interchange with a 2940, and there should be some of them in the salvage yards, the clutches and seals can be had aftermarket.I don't see where you would go wrong,if it is damaged too much to repair, the engine, wheels and tires will get you your money back if they are good.

Depends. If the failure is due to some tinkerer adding a non wet clutch oil to the trans/hydraulics. Run away as the pto clutch, pto brake, high-low shift & wheel brake linings are laying on the bottom of the trans case or in the oil screen & filter. At serial # 157511 the high-low clutch was upgraded. At 301275 the final drives were upgraded. So if it's a post 301275 and the wrong oil hasn't been added. And the rad coolant anti-corrosion inhibiter has been maintained. Buy it. Coolant and oil test kits avalable at Mother Deere.
