On page 102 of the OM-R2035R Operator Manual for JD 70 tractor it says can rear wheels can be ballasted by liquid or cast iron weights of 150 pounds each that can be bolted to the rear wheels and secured from you John Deere dealer. Cast iron weights were made by JD and for tractors long before 1956.

Many things like weights were listed in seperate accessories manuals or price sheets for the dealer back then. Some of those have been reprinted before and copies may still be available still from some of the JD magazines many of us subscribe to. Not sure when the first JD cast iron weights were brought out but they made JD D2628R and F&H DP2628 weights to fit earlier letter series tractors as well like the D,G,B,A,H,L,LA,M and those weren't shown in parts catalogs either and clamps were available to mount them on even spoked wheels. I don't believe those will fit your 70 but I could be wrong ?? I have some of all 3 weights and could measure and find out I suppose? Some others have those weight numbers and should pipe in and let you know for sure.

Glen,
Wheel weights were available for front D steel (no indication of any for the rear steel) apparently to hold the front end down. Availability of wheel weights corresponded to introduction of low pressure rubber tires in late 1932. French & Hecht were making most of the wheels, and they also made the weights. The inner weights had larger holes to accomodate the hubs, with the generic W161 casting number, often followed by a letter to distinguish the various hub-hole sizes for different tractors. The outside weights were larger and thinner and as I recall (I'm in the shop and info in the basement) they had c/n W162. Each weight normally weighed a nominal 150 lbs. I think Deere got into casting weights in the late '30's, about the time of their flat-spoke rear wheels. Weights were attached to the spoke wheels with threaded J-hooks.

Weights are included in the Deere Price Lists of the times, but not in the parts catalogs (Repair Catalogs) for some (unknown to me) reason. In August 1952 when Deere started publishing AC1000, the accessories catalog, they were included in it.

Thanks Duane! That's what I was trying to think of was the AC1000 accessories catalog. Great info on the other early weights also. I've never ran across any of those early weights yet. I'm saving that info somewhere? Thanks again.

Several rear weights will fit your 70. Early ones had a more round center hole but later ones like on this 830 and the hurricane eye looking center to allow you to adjust the wheels with weights still on. Those weights are everywhere still and were used on new generation tractors and sound guard body models. You may find them with JD numbers or with other numbers made by aftermarket foundries.

i just came across a set from out west or in mexico somewher that had no notches at all in the centre. i'd only ever seen the small notch and the large ones like you show. I also learned that the later ones have a slightly larger centre hole on the inside for the later heavier hubs, and they don't fit the F1500R's as well. Oh, and don't tighten thos F1500's up tight with never siez on the wedges. It breaks the casting.....

What number is on those weights? That may be what he needs for the 70 ? I wasn't 100% sure the later weights but would fit all 70s but just been told they would fit 520-730 row crops and you know how that goes. Just used the pic of the 830 with weights because it was handy and I already had it posted on YT. The larger holes with wings is so you can get the wheel wrench in there to move the hubs if needed on row crop tractors. So are the 3 holes in later weights just the wrong spacing is why they won't fit?

They're all the same part number, looks like they just cut them out more as people found out how stubborn it was to adjust them. I believe they first appeared on R's in 49 or so and when the 50's and 60's came out they put the small notch in, then put the large notch (hurricane) later on when they realized that more than a couple weights needed more room. The only difference i could find is that the centre is slightly larger on the later ones to accomidate a larger hub where the wedges go. Maybe they realized how easy they crack. Of course my 4430 hubs are cracked now too..... but not as easy as F1500R's. I'll check when i feel like lifting some 140lb weights, but I'm sure they're all the same casting number, though knowing deere there'll be about a hundred part numbers. They put the casting number on the back side (toward the tractor)

while I was out to the farm today I notice that the wieghts that We have on the front of the 4020 are the round center one that you are talking about I did't get time to see if they had casting numbers but I'm sure they where off a 720 that My father inlaw had they are yellow but that does'nt mean any thing I let you know the next time over there

Deere did indeed make rear wheel weights for the number series tractor. The casting number is A3404R. That same weight casting was used with little change from the mid 1950s all the way to the early 1990s! You should be able to find a few in your area, but if you happen to be around Indiana I"d be happy to sell you a set.

There are no rear wheel weights listed in the 70 parts book. The wheel weights from a 4010 or 4020 should fit the 70 as well. Any New Generation tractor that has F1500R wheel castings can be used as a referance when ch ecking part #'s at your local dealer. Just in case you're interested, there was a set of factory front weights available for the 70,but they are quite scarce and very spendy.
