1010 won't go into gear.

I have a 1010 sitting in my back yard that I've been working on the past three months. Two months ago I moved the tractor a bit to facilitate removing the front-end loader. Then moved it back to my work area. Everything operated correctly.

The tractor has now been in one place for these last two months. I've overhauled the engine, tuned it up, run it, re-torqued the head bolts, tuned it back up. Today I decided it was time to put it in gear and run it around a bit. However, it wouldn't go into gear. Just as though the clutch isn't being depressed. I checked clucth free play and got it close to the required 3/4". Still won't go into gear. If I turn the tractor off, I can get it in gear. If it's running I can't get it in gear. I've pulled the inspection plate and looked in there while operating the clutch pedal ... all seems fine.

I did not do anything with the back end. I did pull the oil pan to re-ring the pistons, but nothing else.

The tractor runs great and purrs like a kitten, but this not going into gear is driving me nuts.

Any ideas?

Al

As the other posted stated, it's common. Some tractor companies - e.g. Kubota - have a block-off lever on the clutch pedal that you flip up when parking. It keeps the pressure off the clutch pedal and keeps it from getting stuck. If it hasn't been stuck long - and you can do this safely - just sit in it facing forward with space ahead of you - and start it in gear- then hit the throttle and push the clutch pedal in. It will probably break loose pretty easy. If you don't want to - or can't start it -then have someone two you - and put it in a mid-range gear - and then let the clutch up gradually a few times until you feel it pop loose.

OK, tell me just how stupid this idea is ... I rebuilt the tractor at my city house, so I don't have a whole lot of room to drive it around except out on the street where the yahoos speed up and down at well past the residential speed limit.

How about if I get it in the dirt alley, put it in 5th, tie the clutch pedal down then hitch it to my 4X4 and drag it to see if the clutch breaks free?

Is that plain dumb?

You probably have the classic stuck/rusted clutch problem, sort of common with tractors because they sit a lot. The clutch disc rusts to either the flywheel or the preassure plate and of course when it does that it keeps spining when the pedal is pushed down. Tie or block the pedel down for a couple days or, but be very careful if you do it this way. Start the tractor in gear the higher the better and then drive it around with the clutch pedel down. Just make sure you have a lot of room to drive it in and be ready to shut it off fast if you have to because you will not be able to stop it till the clutch pops loose.
