'50 A won't always shift

I recently bought a "50 A with a straight 6 (no overdrive) transmission. Sometimes the transmission will not shift into the selected gear - but acts as if in neutral - eventually it will shift into the selected gear. The transmission has a hint of a growl to it (I have heard worse) but seems to work well otherwise.

What are some propable causes for the shifting misfunction? What are some probable solutions for it?

Thanks for your response, Allanj

the detent springs and balls could be rusted and hanging up or maybe the sockets where the gear shift ball fits into the shifter rail is probly worn out, remove the shifter cover and you can feel where the gear shift ball has always worked. I have used a welder, and filled in the worn places and worked just fine. Don't get cared away with the welder
