48 A Steering Gear

I just completed a restoration on my 48 A, 609540. My father owned it from new as the primary motive of power on his dairy farm until 1980. It caught on fire with a full load of fuel in 2001. I rebuild everything except the transmission which was in excellent condition. Everything works fine and it started on the second roll over.

Now the question: I renewed everything possible in the steering gear and front pedestal. The shaft and pedestal casting looked great. Every similar tractor I have seen has the steering gear packed with grease. The restoration guides I have also show grease. By my manuals the origional intent was for gear lube in the steering gear housing. I used gear lube and it leaks very slowly. I intend to go back to grease. Has anyone been successful in sealing the steering gear well enough to hold gear lube without spotting the floor?

Thanks

Use corn head grease from Deere. I hear this grease will flow around some unlike reg. grease that gets hard and gets pushed out of the way and then you really have no lube.

Thanks for the tip. I will try it. I was considering cold temperature snowmobile grease or a synthetic for the same reason to aviod ending up with grease everywhere except where it is needed.
