i was just reading the post by p browning on the 1934b and he made a statement about the inspections of jd tractors. i've never thought about what type of inspections jd tractors may have gone through. does anybody have any insight into this statement? i've never seen anything written up about that.

Final Quality Assurance Inspection (Final QA) is the point at which the tractor is said to be ready for transport & sale. The manufacturing process being complete is the object of inspections. No tractor passed final QA without a serial plate. Each tractor was to have a certain configuration such as with or without -- PTO, lights, lights & starter, fenders, wheel types is special, and all manner of "optional" items you can think of. This pedigree often made its way into the tractor's final records -- containing those same data points we seek when we write to Two-Cylinder seeking "as built" data for our Little Johnny! All fluids are checked for being at a certain level. This "certain level" amount may in fact be NONE as in the case of gasoline in the fuel tank, water in the radiator, and perhaps oil in the air cleaner bowl. There may have been a kit shipped with each tractor, and as such, its contents would be verified. Such a kit might contain spark plugs, a grease gun, along with any "loose" parts that could become detached from the tractor along the way. Reinstallation of removed parts would become part of the dealer preparation of the tractor for sale. Tractors with electric start most likely were shipped without battery -- inspectors would ensure no "factory" battery remained installed. Air pressure would have to be check on rubber-tired models. These observations are by no means from JD experience, but rather some comparisons to inspections made to missile launcher systems I used to build for the US Army while working for Martin Marietta Aerospace in Orlando, Florida. Surely by now I'd have hoped a JD Retiree would come in and enlighten us as to what final QA inspection of a John Deere Tractor amounts to -- both then and perhaps now.
