I want to put a C mag on my 1942 BR. It's a 1042 mag. 30 degrees is Stamped above the lag angle timming marks. The cup is marked 6274. No degree mark on cup. What should the lag angle be set at? I thought I new a little bit about this stuff, but this has me confused.
Thanks Much,
John

I know this will probably confuse the issue even more, but I talked to an old JD mechanic who had a lot of experience in the 50's. He told me they routinely reduced the lag angle about 5 degrees on tractors that would be run only on gas. I think this had the effect of making the running timing 5 degrees later than the factory setting to compensate for the quicker ignition of gasoline. Is that correct? Does 5 degrees sound about right? I tried setting the timing on my H about 5 degrees late(not changing lag angle), but didn't notice much change in smoothness, etc. Starting didn't seem to be affected. Any comment from you guys would be appreciated. Good discussion!
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks,

Paul, The Wico C-1042 mags for the JD H originally were set up with a 2061B drive cup for 30 degrees. Other all fuel JD 2 cylinders of that time were set up with drive cups for 35 degrees. To compensate and help get timing right for use with gasoline Wico came up with the special 6274 short lug drive cup for use with 25 degree setting. I say special because it was used on no other 2 cyld. engines or Wico mags but just specifically JD. There was also a 25 degree 7596 long lug drive cup for the JD Ds converted to gasoline with Wico mags. So was only a 5 degree change on the H probably because of its smaller engine size and different RPMs and 10 deg. change on the others. Like John T said you are only changing the start time by moving the stop ring. To get the true 25 degrees if that's what you want you have to move the stop and mag some to get it somewhere in between 30 & 25 deg. with a timing light. To make it simpler and easier to get there you use the 6274 25 deg. drive cup. Other engines like 4 cyld. Continental in a Lincoln welder have gone from 27 to 20 to later 15 deg. lag angle on a mag. Some of it has to do with fuel changes and engine changes over the years. For some reason we always set up mags for a 6 cyld Minneapolis Moline tractor on gasoline at 45 degrees yet for LP or natural gas we set them at 52 degrees. Some of it has to do with timing the engine to run right without preignition (knocking) and get all the fuel to combust at the proper time according to the engine design and fuel type used.

Paul, Its my personal opinion that 35 BTDC is much tooooo o fast of advance for operation on gas tractors, although it may have been suited when using the lower octane slower burning distillates or drip fuels (all fuel). Therefore, if one has a 35 degree drive cup (like some older Wico C mags used) one would have to compensate by timing/rotating the entire mag forward CW to retard the run timing. However, if the mag has a 25 degree drive cup it may be suitable for gasoline use.

Ideally if all is new and theres no wear when the mag is mounted dead center straight up n down (NOT forward or backwards any at all) the 25 degree cup would fire her 25 BTDC and the 35 at 35 BTDC and she could be fine tuned from there for more or less advance

Remember, the rear lag angle stop plate adjustment ONLY affects start timing NOT run timing. Movement of the entirr mag out front in the flange affects BOTH

For some basic, direct data on magnetos for a JD tractor, check out the second half of the section called Elect Systems over at the JD-H Restoration Site. The general nature of the data coupled with the expert opinions herein expressed should give you a fair idea of how to proceed from here. Enjoy! (PatB)

I may as well toss in my two cents worth here and Glen or Duane can correct me if Im wrong.

1) The "Lag Angle" refers to how many degrees the mag lags in timing when starting (spring winds n trips) versus when shes running. Thats determined simply by the rotational mounting relationship of the drive cup to the shaft (and where the shaft is i.e. the entire mags rotation in the flange). The mag fires when the cam opens the points, and when they open depends on the rotational mounting position of the drive cup to the shaft. The older C mags often had a 35 degree cup cuz they were mostly for all fuel in which case one could set the run timing more advanced since the distillate burned slower and then when they ran more on gasoline it burns faster and on many Wico X mags intended for gasoline they used only 25 degree drive cups. Sooooo oo Wico made a way to adjust the rear impulse stop plate so with any drive cup the start impulse trip setting would still allow them to start at TDC yet run at whatever advance the cup and where the entire mag was rotated (loosen two flange mount bolts) would allow.

2) The actual Lag Angle (how much start timing lags run timing) doesnt change (its fixed by the drive cups mount) when you adjust the rear impulse stop plate, ONLY the start timing is changed then.

3) When you loosen the rear screws and rotate the impulse stop plate, youre adjusting ONLY where the impulse trips i.e. its START TIMING..... ..... NOT the Lag Angle and NOT the run timing.

4) When you loosen the 2 mag to flange mount screws and rotate the entire mag, you change BOTH the start timing and the run timing BUT NOT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO (thats the fixed lag angle)

5) What youre actually doing when you loosen the 4 rear screws and adjust the stop plate to those 2 or 4 index marks, is setting the start timing relative to whatever drive cup you have so the mag can SNAP n fire at TDC or wherever you want to set it i.e. your ONLY setting the start timing, youre NOT changing the lag angle youre NOT changing where she will run at over 250 RPM (run timing).

So Glen or Duane do I have this all correct??? Youre the guys who helped me prepare my Wico Seminar at the last GOG so if Im wrong its you guys fault lol lol just kidding

Lets me try this again, I was in a hurry for an auction lol and made a mistake (my first lol)

The drive cup determines when the points open, it turns the shaft, and a 25 degree drive cup would theoretically open them at 25 degrees BEFORE the horizontal (when female slot in governor shaft is fore n aft flat horizontal and pistons at TDC) while a 35 degree cup opens them 35 degrees BEFORE the horizontal. I can look at a mag where the points just break open and where the drive cup is and physically about tell if its a 25 or a 35 cup

AGAIN, adjusting the rear stop plate ONLY changes the impulse start time while rotating the entire mag up front adjusts BOTH the start and run timing.

HERES MY CORRECTION THEN I guess then it could be said when you adjust the rear impulse stop plate youre changing where she starts at versus where she runs at and since I called that the LAG ANGLE (difference in start lagging run time) I reckon you are actually adjusting the Lag Angle which I just swore youre NOT changing. The correction would be where she runs at DOES NOT CHANGE by adjusting the impulse stop plate cuz at over 250 RPM thats not in the picture BUTTTTT T I guess you can and are adjusting the lag angle afterall when you adjust the stop plate cuz that does change the difference in where she starts versus where she runs BUT THE DRIVE CUP AND WHEN IT OPENS THE POINTS dont get changed by the rear stop plate adjustments is what I should have said EXCUSEEEEE EEE MEEEEE EEE LOL

Off to the auction hope I havent totally cornfused yall by now

Yep even though its simple once you understand it, it took me a while to pin down all the exact details and my "Correction" was needed to set the record sreaight lol but one needs to define all the terminology and definitions including what the Lag Angle is to communicate all these timing issues. Im not making it to Springfield, as Dirty Harry said, " A mans got to know his limitations"

Glen is correct on that drive cup. It is explained in the Wico manuels. The john deere manuel says to put it on the 2nd mark from the far left which amounts to the same thing. It was so a service man could carry one mag, 2 drive cups and have a replacement mag for either drive type he went to service, with out having to make any adjustments, just install the cup, then the mag.I would probably back it up one more or 3rd from left to account for cheap gas versus the tractor fuel or kerosene which burned slower.

John, The Wico C & XH mags 6274 drive cup is a 25 deg. cup for John Deeres only. Only when using the 6274 cup the center impulse stop mark in back of C & XH mags represents 3 degrees. You will want it set at 25 degrees and each mark represents another 5 degrees so to get 25 it should be just past the 4th mark (23 deg.)(about 4 1/2 marks) to the left for CCW drive mag to get 25 degrees. When using the other drive cups for 35 degrees or whatever they are for then the center mark represents 13 degrees and you go right or left by each 5 degree mark to the get correct lag angle for CW or CCW drive.

I don't think that matches the info I have seen on them.(JD service manual) That center mark should represent the same figure no matter which coupling is used.

The easy way I remember it is a 25 means you go 2 1/2 marks past center and a 35 goes 3 1/2 marks past.

Nope Mike, Email me sometime for a copy of the Wico manuals. The use of the 6274 drive cup and the center mark then and only being 3 degrees is plainly stated in the Wico XH service manual but not the C manual or JD manuals covering mags. The 6274 drive cup later with the use of gasoline in our old JDs and going to 25 degrees lag angle. The drive cup works to update a Wico C to 25 degrees as well is why you find many now with that drive cup on them. With other drive cups on a 1,2, or 4 cyld. Wico C & XH the center mark is 13 degrees. For 6 cyld. Wico XH the center mark is 33 degrees.

The JD SM2000 Tractors & General and SM2029 Electrical manuals cover Wico and Edison Splitdorf mag repairs and explain it some but were printed earlier with no update to mention the use of the later special drive cups or why the setting has to be different for a 6274 drive cup. The JD manuals also show overhauling the 909 XH & C mags that were CW drive and only used on the L LA tractors while the other Waterloo 2 cyld. tractors used C & XH 477, 1042, 1263 & 1300 CCW drive mags with the impulse stop being put on the LH side and moving marks to the left. So the JD manuals can be confusing to some also if they don't understand that. Also something to be noted is many of the drive cups on the Wico mags will not be marked or have number stamped on them. Then you have to check with timing light or on mag test stand or by comparison.

John, Just email me if you need a copy of the Wico C manual. The 6274 drive cup was used on Wico C & XH for 25 degrees for gasoline. Since your mag is stamped 30 deg. it probably came orginally with a 2061B drive cup for 30 deg. for JD H and others on distillate or gas. The other short lug drive cup 3565 was 35 deg. for distillate fuels. They had different drive cups to change the lag angle and yet keep the drive lugs horizontal for proper timing yet fine tuning of the lag angle is done with the adjustable stop and marks. The setting can be tested on a mag test stand or also with a timing light. Duane has a good procedure for that on here you can find in archives by searching.
