I recently went to attach the pittman arm to the blade of the sickle to my 1950 JD M. On other models, the end piece would pivot against the spring to open the jaws so it fits around the ball. This one is a solid piece and does not turn. It seems I have to push against the spring to open it. The only problem is the spring is extremely hard and I don"t know how I can get it attached. Is there any trick, or does brute force rule here? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

can you loosen the bolts, holding the two pieces together, up enough to slip it on and then retighten the bolts?

Suppose to be a flat spreader spring on top of arm and clamp that you push down to hold the clamp pieces open by pushing it down with a punch. The while holding the clamps on pitman over ball on sickle use punch to lift the spreader spring while it clamps down. Maybe that spreader spring is gone? JD dealer should be able to get it if they don't have the flat spring.
