I have been looking to replace one of my tractors in my haying operation and have been looking at the 03 series, mainly a 5203 or 5303. Does anyone have any experiences with these tractors as far as reliability and performance goes? Thanks in advance for any information and opinions!

You gotta be kidding!! That would make to much sense. I also work at a dealership, but in the parts dept. So I see things from a different perspective. The numbering system that Deere has makes no sense whatsoever when it comes to the tractor itself. I just wish they hadn't started using the same model numbers over again. Most customers don't understand that the letter in front of the number is part of the model nuber also. I am referring mostly to L & G in this case.

As far as reliability these tractors are fine, but they are very limited on options. They can only come with one SCV. More SCVs requires dealer installment. They are straddle mount only. The shifters are not nearly as convenient, and they are not offered with shuttle shift, so loader work will more difficult than say a 5225. The 03 series has a lower flow hydraulic pump than the other tractors. Deere made these tractors so they could compete with the other colors who were raking them over the coals with cheap tractors. "Kubota, and Kioti tractors are cheap" seems to be the favorite phrase. I'm a deere salesman, so I hear it all the time. If comfort is not an issue with you go for the 03, but if you want a small tractor with comfort go with a 5025 series tractor with a platform and 12/12 power reverser. The controls are a heap nicer on the platform tractor, and the reverser is a must with a loader. Oh just FYI the 03 tractors are made and assembled in Mexico. The 5025 series is assembles in Agusta, GA.

I'm sure that if you recheck, you'll find that the 03's are made in India, not Mexico.

Yup seems a lot of people think that, and maybe formerly they were, but when we enter codes to place the order it says they are being shipped from Mexico. The 5025 series says they come from Agusta, GA, 6000s says Manheim, the 7,8,and 9000 series say Waterloo. Perhaps 03s are made in India, but JD order info tells us they are being shipped from Mexico. So Im saying I dunno!!

salesman, made in Mexico you say?Re: John Deere 03 in reply to wilamayb, 06-16-2006 18:09:04
I would walk past the 03 and 25's and look at a 5105 with MFWD. A 2WD tractor is not your 1st choice to pull draft loads or where traction is required. 2WD are better suited for forage blowers, standby generators etc.

Here's a little blurb copied from Mother Deere's web site.

Miscellaneous
Underhood Muffler Yes

Joystick SCV Control Optional w/ Loader

Inboard Planetary Yes

Axle Type Flanged

Brakes - Type and Control Hydraulic Wet Disc

Country of Manufacture India

its nice to see a salesman on here. i don't keep up with all the different tractor model numbers so when your talking about all these different size tractors i have no idea what horsepower your talking about. maybe you could make this suggestion to deere and have them give model numbers to tractors that make some sense. like a 2503 tractor would be 25 hp and made in 03. that way everybody would know what anybody else is talking about when they see a tractor for sale or read about one. just a thought. better models could be labeled 2503a, b etc., but at least everybody would be on the same page when they look at a tractor.
