Hi Folks .... I have a 6 volt tractor and I noticed a lot of people switch to 12 volt ... Can you tell me why and what's involved ? ... I just bought this tractor and the generator is not hooked up and the battery needs to be replaced and there are no lights on her ...I also need steering parts ... The good thing is it's GREEN! Thanks John

Just read a discussion of changing from a 6 to a 12 volt on another John Deere discussion board. It's information that will help you with this job.

Switching an A to 12 volt will make it start better in cold weather (which shouldn't be an issue in your part of the country) or if high compression pistons were or will be installed. The change isn't that difficult. Install a 12 volt generator or alternator,(your choice), 12 volt light bulbs and a 12 volt battery that will fit into the battery compartment on the tractor, there is no need to replace the starter. I assume the tractor is equipped with a magneto so you wouldn't have any ignition items to change. In your case, if the tractor is an original AW I would keep the original 6 volt system, these are tractors that probably should be kept in original form, especially a 44 model.

The switch to 12 volt is made because 6 volt systems turn the motor over slower than 12 volt and if weak not at all. Changing to 12 volt is a challenge, but if you seach past posts you will find several explainations of the keys to successful 12 volt change over. I prefer to keep with the 6 volt system. I keep the JD in tune, I buy good 6 volt batteries, Optima is my choice. On your 44 A, just get use to opening the petcocks. Most of the time only one will need to be opened. No big deal really. I grew up on the seat of a 45 JD AW. It was difficult in cold weather for sure, but started most of the time. If we had the Optima battery back then we would have had no trouble.
