on my 1989 310c I have a charging problem.
When started there is no charge from alternator,no tachometer, and no accesories.
If I continuously flick the key to check bulbs setting I usually get tach reading and there is about 17 volts at main terminal of alternator and accesories work however the voltage doesn,t seem to get through to the batteries to charge. Also sometimes It will not start only click and the next time I go to it it starts fine.
The alternator, starter, and key switch have been checked and or replaced. can anyone help??

I don't have a schematic in front of me, so this comes from memory... sounds like there may be at least 2 problems there... There should be an accesory relay mounted behind(under) the right console... I think its bolted to the fender. That could be causing the intermittant "no power" when started...The alternator output wire should go directly to the large terminal on the starter solenoid, which in turn is directly connected to the battery positive terminal. So check that wire at either end... at the alternator and at the starter solenoid... bad crimp ?? someones been in there "fixing" it ?? ...The tach reading runs off an ac tap on the alternator.. so if the accesories and any powered items arent working , then the alternator isnt getting power to excite it to start charging... Also , when the harness chafes thru , it can do some odd things when wiring gets grounded that shouldnt... tug on the harness in the area on the right front corner of the cab where it exits the cab.. some things to check.... report back with any developments....
