Model M - Transmission Noise

From this information, can you diagnose the problem? Solution?

I assume the problem is worn bearings.

From my perspective, if there was an easy solution it would be done and much more worth on the market. My experience with those dubuque trannies is that usually whatever you do to them they come out sounding the same. I had mine down to the case twice and replaced some gears, ring and pinion, and bearing and races - still the same noise.

Os if you have to have the tractor for nostalga or something be prepared to live with the noise. I sure wouldn't pay retail for that kind of problem.

Now to raise some dust. Why the M? If you go with a 420 you can have ease of mounting and dismounting, bigger motor, water pump, three point hitch, power steering, 5 speed trans, live pto, etc.

You make me feel bad that i am restoring my MT. :)

My transmission has always made more of a grinding/rubbing noise...i think that it is just the nature of the beast. If anyone is using the 90W spec'ed transmission oil, i went to the highter 140/85 and it seemed to quiet down some, but not eliminate it by any means = i have kind of become used to the sound as i have the 2-popping sound.

I bought my MT for many sentimental reasons; that is almost the only reason to buy anything of such antiquity and high expense.
