Can someone point me in the right direction for a parts and service manual for a # 5 mower. Plan to buy one for my 52 A and thought it would come in handy. How good a mower are they??

Original Operator's Manuals show up regularly on eBay. Besides being a service manual they are also a parts manual, a total of about 130 pages. They are usally a lot cheaper on eBay compared to John Deere Pubs.

My earliest memories are of a No 5 behind a MH50. It was rigged up with the cable lift and other than running through a cable every couple of years, it cut a mean lick. On that b, does it have a rockshaft or power lift? If so that may be the rig you need for your b. That is sure easier than the lever. Just a thought...
I have one to use and a parts mower just in case.
Gonna hook it to the 720 eventually, but we ran it the other day off the 3pt of the new(er) MF. It does fine still. Has the hydraulic cylinder for lift and that makes it effortless really. We cut nearly 90 acres of hay twice a year, and 40 more pasture acres another two times a year for close to 30 years with that mower, and it was bought used. So if you keep a little bit of grease on them and don't never let em run dry, they will keep you happy a long time.
Good luck

The number 5 is a good mower. I restored Dad's and have it ready to use on the Model B. I got parts off of Ebay, and at Mother Deere's. I found an original manual on Ebay. Also got lucky and found an original set of PTO shields. I like the mower, but I'm getting a little old to lift that bar by hand. The B does not have hydraulics, so I have no choice.
I bought a new cutter bar that holds the sections from TSC. Now I have two so one is always ready to replace one with broken sections. The guards I got at Deere they don't look original, but they a rock bouncing tough and hard to break. Here is a link to a nice web site on the No. 5

The #5 was probably the best mower that JD ever made. I used then extensively as a kid behind a JD H and B. I found one a couple years ago that was in pretty good shape and have since restored it. I got the manuals from JD and was able to get most of the seals and bearings from my dealer. Now i have to get my JD B restored so i can go cut hay.

years ago i was going to mount a model 38 (i think) on my b and a guy helping me told me that the round rubber bushings that the clamps go over to mount the unit to the tractor would wear out in no time. so i cut a set of weld on replacements balls that go on todays tractors lower lift arms up and ground the outside where the tang use to be off down smooth and used the mower all summer without any problems with them wearing out. i don't know if your going to use the tractor for show or really use it. if its for show i'd put in the rubber ball mounts.
