I looked at possibly purchasing a 1946 Model M.

After the tractor had I run only 15 minutes or so, the temperature guage was way over 220 degrees. The cooling system was filled with antifreeze and even at 220 plus it was not boiling when the radiator cap was removed. However there were a few drips coming out of the overflow tube.

Is there an explanation for this? I heard or read that the early versions of the M had the temperature sensor placed in the top tank and that it's somewhat normal for the guages to read hot.

Any insight on this problem.

A meat thermometer will give you the top tank temp.This is the first check you should make on overheating.Ive had one in my tool kit for 50 years.Buy them at yard sales for 50 cents.

KEN, THE M WAS MADE 1947 TO 1952, MINE IS A 1950.
IF I FILL THE RAD. ALL THE WAY UP ,IT WILL PUSH SOME COOLENT OUT. AS LONG AS I CANT SEE THE FINS, I DONT WORRY ABOUT IT. AFTER WORKING THE TRACTOR HARD, SOME STEAM CAN BE SEEN AFTER STOPPING. THIS IS NORMAL. MY TEMP. RUNS AT 210.

Thanks for all of the help. I read the reprint of the service bulletin in the Jan., 2006 issue of Green. From the many responses, it's obvious that Ms and MTs ran hot.

Must also be sure the gauge is accurate.

Those M's and MT's run hot !! Early ones had temp.sensor in top water outlet later ones it was moved to back of the block where it's cooler.

Ken,
A couple of things not mentioned yet - antifreeze and water must be premixed before pouring in a thermosyphon system like JD's w/o waterpumps use. If they were poured in separately the thermosyphon cooling will not cool properly.
And are you sure the gauge is good? Some of the cheap replacement gauges are not accurate, and if it has recently been replaced the owner should know what gauge he installed.

Although I am aware of the problem of inaccurate gauges, I did not address that with the owner.

The gauge was new and that could be the problem.

i'm not familiar with m's, but do they have curtains in front of the radiator? are they shut? how about pressure washing the fins real good to be sure theres not alot of gunk built up on them.

Thanks for the assessments of the "hot temperature" problem on the "M" I was looking at.

Note that the radiator is new. The tractor does not have shutters. The owner and I took off the radiator cap when the temp showed above 220 on the guage and the coolant was not boiling.

Is it typical for early Model Ms to register a high temps because of the location of the sensor?

I would just let her drip out the overflow until it finds the level it prefers.

there was a service bulliten in Jan 2006 green magazine about this, it states that only enough anti-freeze to cover the top of the centrer tubes so that the anti-freeze can ciculate and yes the temp gauge is located in the hotest spot on the engine. My M runs at about 200 on the gauge but you can tell the engine / rad is much cooler by putting your hand on it

Both M's that i had ran around 210 degrees with antifreeze in them i never had a problem. If the rad. is not full of junk inside or out it should be ok.
