2010 Carb

I recently pruchased a 2010 (not sure what year as serial number plate is missing) and the tractor runs fine until it gets warm and then it looses power and the engine dies. I wait a little while and it will take right off again. I am fairly sure it is the carburetor as I can pull on the choke and it will take off for a bit and then die again. Is there a way that I can determine what the carb model number is for sure and does anybody know about the after market carbs available?

The others got you all squared away on narrowing it down. Does it have a fuel pump also? The 2010 could have the Marvel Schebler TSX-810 (AT11680T) or MS TSX-899 (AT21142T) or 2010 crawler MS TSX-808 (AT12357T). Should be stamped on a metal or brass tag on carb someplace. All the TSX models on 2010 use a MS/Zenith kit # K7515. Floats and some throttle and choke shafts and parts are available yet for the TSX and they are good carbs and rebuildable. The Zenith 14996 is the replacement carb recommended in Zenith/MS catalogs and yes it is a universal replacement type carb with universal linkage setup that you have to make fit. Not a real problem if you have to go with the replacement but not always a quickie bolt on either.

Had the same problem with mine shortly after a complete tune up. Took the carb off twice thinking it must be a fuel problem, didn't help. Put the old condenser back in, runs like a top. Condensers do go bad both old and new.

I had a guy bring me a carb. from a JD60 acted the same way. I didn't see anything plugged up in the carb. So I went to his house and drove this thing. Sure enough it "acted" like a carb. you pull out the choke and it would run better. I brought a new points and condenser set and put those in and problem went away ! Some of this stuff is sure weird.

The engine may have a defective coil or condensor that fails when it heats up.

You need to carry a spark tester, and IMMEDIATELY check for a good, hot spark when it quits.

There may be a restriction of the gasoline flow to the carburetor, ranging from a plugged gas tank vent, the wrong gas cap, or a plugged screen or valve.

A way to check for this is (engine cool, and NOT running) to remove the carburetor drain plug, and let the gasoline flow into a catch bucket.

There will be an initial rush of gas as the 1/2 cup, or so in the float bowl drains out, then the gas should continue to flow at a steady, but slower rate. Let a gallon or so drain out, and see if the flow remains constant, and of an adequate amount to sustain the engine, if were running.

I am a bit uneducated on the 2010, I do know the 3010s and 4010s, but a fuel problem is a fuel problem no matter what. The first thing is don't immediately blame the carb, it can't do its job if the fuel can't get to it, so check out any fuel filters that might be present, also the fuel tank cap might be at fault, the vent hole could be plugged. You could have rust or other crud in the tank which will restrict the flow. I can't remember if the 2010 has a fuel pump? If so, it could be faulty, and also, don't rule out the ignition system, a weak coil,or defective condensor will often exhibit the same symptoms.

Hey guys thanks for the help. I have already looked at the sediment bowl and replace the screen and it appears that everything there is okay. Sometimes it seems to act like vapor lock. When it dies I have looked at the sediment bowl and it always has fuel in it. That should rule out blockage into and through the filter. I will check out the ignition but my experience with choking a dieing engine and having it recover somewhat usualy means fuel and not ignition. Thanks for all the help.

They are just saying don't always point fingers at the carb or one thing till you rule out ignition or other things as the problem. I've had new condensers and coils that were bad right off the shelf and dist. caps and rotors that were new with hairline cracks and that kind of stuff will drive you nuts if you are pointing at just one source.
