Questions about the PTO on a JD 4010. I was on here a couple days ago and asked abotu it and was told that a pin could be broke or bent, or an idler gear could have a tooth missing or something casueing the tractor to make a racket when the pto was engaged and under a little load. well i split the tractor today and am really confused now. all the gears are in perfect shape. and there was no pin in the shaft anywhere but there was an oval shaped hole in the shaft when you first split it and another one a little farther back that you have to take another gear off to see. but no pin in eityher and couldn't find a pin anywhere. But everythign else is ok. then on the shaft that comes out of the clutch and goes to the transmission there is a gear that locks up when pto is engaged and free when disengaged. there is one small spacer between the gear and trtansmission. and it looks like the spacer has alot of room( about 1 inch) to slide back and forth on the shaft and looks like shaft is a little wore there. this also allows that gear to slide. is this gear supposed to be held in one place by more spacers or a snap ring and this the reason it could be knocking or is the gear supposed to be free to move like this. Sorry i have written a book but this really has stumped me and my frfiend that is helping work on it. Thanks. Also is it possible that someone earlier could have switcher the pto over to a 4020 set up. thanks

The shaft that turns or doesn't turn as you engauge the pto is the pto drive and when you lock it to the engine by engauging the pto clutch it wonn't turn. The bottom shaft with the elogated holes is where the pto shifter pins should be. You need to remove an idler gear to get at the lower pto drive gear. The idler gear has two rows of needle bearings in it.

i have torn it apart all the ay and saw the two holes and the gears with the needle bearings. Is the shaft that locks up when you engage the pto supposed to be aloud to slide up and down the saft a little or is it supposed to stay in one spot. Thanks

Yes those shafts will float in and out. They are traped in place when the tractor goes back together. Make sure the trust washers are all there.

How many thrust washers are supposed to be between the gear that locks up when pto engaged and transmission. right now there is only one and it looks like it has been moving around and wearing on the splines of the shaft. Thanks for all your help.

There is one thrust washer on that shaft. When in doubt replace. It is pn R26681.

Thanks everyone for your help with this problem on the 4010. it was kindda confusing becasue the dummy that owned the tractor before me somewhere down the line split it and did away with the 1000 rpm pto( gears and everything) and had the 540 hooked up backwards. but good thing i looked because the teeth in the collar and gear were starting to get chewed up pretty good. thanks again.

123Farmer,if you don't have a tech. manual you should get one. Also you can go to Deere dot Com and under 4010 parts see a breakdown. If your pto has a stub shaft on rear bolted on with 4 bolts it's 4010 pto only. I think you can't put a 4020 pto shaft in a 4010 because the tranny cases are different. 4010 pto shaft at mid tractor has two elongated slots and is supposed to have two(2) skinny pins to hold and engage/disengage shift gears for 540 or 1000 rpm's. If you don't need or want 1000 rpm pto I have in previous threads tried to explain how I altered several 4010/3010's when I was a service manager for a JD dealer over 20 yrs ago. No more little pins/no more splits for this problem.HTH, Tx Jim
