I have a '53 40T with wide front end. The steering is pretty sloppy and I would like to tighten it if possible. When planting, I have to be sure to plant parallel to the road so the neighbors can't see the crooked rows! I have a lot of play in the steering.
How do I go about tightening this up? Any help is appreciated!

Be sure and check the woodruff key on the steering shaft itself. I had to get an oversized one an file to fit because shaft was worn and didn't want to replace it. A compotent machine shop could repair it if you wanted to go that route. Also check the front to back movement of the shaft, if it has some play it can be taken out by removing some of the small shims that are behind the cover on the front of the housing. Good luck, Jason.

Alan Just went thru the same thing on mine. Start with the adjustment on the top of the steering shaft. Loosen the locknut and turn the ajuster pin in with a screw driver. If you turn it very much you have a lot of slop between the Pin and worm gear. You can also take off the top of the worm case. You can then pry up the vertical shaft and see if the pin that engages the worm is worn out. A new one from Deere is 41.00 If this does not solve the problen you may have worn bushings in the shsft tube.

Good luck
