I have a 420 that is leaking hydraulic fluid where the shafts for the 3 point hitch lift arms come out of the hydraulic unit. Can these seals be replaced without disassembling the hydraulic unit?

Dang, I did it again, I should have said the large hollow shaft on the right may slide out.

Dang I made another mistake. I typed seals and was thinking about bushings. All of them have seals but only the late model ones have bushings in the housing that can be replaced if they get worn.

It sounds like you have the original type seals in there. The new ones will be the one piece lipped type but work fine.

I have heard of people doing a seal replacement on the tractor, but have not attempted it myself.

Careful, If you have a dual hyd. I think the shaft on the right side will slide out, but if it does it the crank will drop down inside the housing and then the four letter words will eventually start flying.

How late a 420 you have. some of the late ones may have bushings in them.

Grab the shafts and if you can klunk then up and down noticeably and the housing does not have seals in it, it may be difficult to impossible to seal

Look at the housing and let us know what the "T" number is that is cast on it.

Henry, I will check as you suggest. The manual that I have shows a retaining ring for the seal in each side and I can see the retaining ring in the housing. That seems to indicate this this one has seals. Thanks for the response and I will get back to you. How difficult will it be if the tractor has seals?
Thanks,
Bill
