i just found a jd service manual that i had forgoten about. it deals with everything electrical on jd tractors up through 840's. it has the wiring diagrams, gen spec, dist spec, mag specs and tons of other stuff including a description and operations introduction. it has a few pages on servicing mags of different types. its just full of good stuff. its number is sm2029, service manual - electrical systems. i think it would answer a lot of questions that i see posted here. i'm going to buy stock in jd pubs tomorrow. i hope this helps some of you guys out.

There are a few though the SM2029 Electrical doesn't show wiring diagrams for but those are covered in some of the Field Service Bulletins like the H, AR, BR, LA tractors not covered. The SM2029 also covers electrical applications and specs for other JD equipment like combines from that era but only tractors and a few power units wiring diagrams. Another JD service manual many discard as being useless because of it's chapter on shop tools and safety but it has much info for electrical is the SM2000 Tractors & General. The SM2000 has a excellent chapter on electrical systems repairs, specifications and diagnosis NOT covered in the SM2029 plus more useful info on valve train reconditioning, carb chapter, distributor, starters, generators and magneto chapter also all in one manual but no wiring diagrams. Yes, the JD service manuals have gotten pricy but they cover many things you won't find in other manuals. Others for the 2 cylinder series also:
SM2011 Hydraulic Equipment (Waterloo tractors)
SM2022 Custom Powr-Trol
SM2024 Carburetors for JD tractors and engines (carb info and repairs for 2 cyld. tractors and other machinery of that era, combines, power units, balers, hay presses, beet harvesters, cotton pickers, forage harvesters and windrowers.)
SM2015 LP Gas Equipment
SM2050 Power Steering
Many other SM manuals that cover specific diesel or number series 2 cyld tractors also.
