I have 46 John Deere A with powertrol. The powertrol oil was leaking into my transmission. I took it to a John Deere dealership, the PTO shaft was worn real bad and allowing the leak. They replaced the PTO shaft. When I picked up the tractor the PTO was making a noise. The mechanic said he reversed or turned one of the gears that is semetrical to give me more lift. He told me the more I use it the better it should get. The noise is a little less when you lift. He said he would change the gear back if I wanted. The PTO made no noise before. The noise sounds like the gears are not meshing. What's you're opinion. Thanks for the help.

Ardie, it depends on what gear he flipped over. ~It sounds like maybe he reversed one of the pump gears, if so it will probably eventually wear in but it could also cause excess gear tooth wear if your new tooth contact pattern is small. ~Any new gear noise that wasn't there before should be cause for concern..
