Hi Guys,

I know where an old 50 is setting out along the hiway. Very straight, clean, original tractor.

The place used to be an operational dairy farm, which has now gone under and the tractor looks as tho it was just parked there after it worked it's last job.

The thing is: This old gal has been setting in the same exact spot for some 20 odd years; I've drove by it many, many times and it has never moved a wheel since forever.

The last time I drove by it the owner had placed a "For Sale" sign on it.

It most certainly has to be stuck and I know for a fact that it hasn't tuned a cog for a long, long time.

I wonder what I should offer him for it?

Allan

Do you know if it has power steering, live PTO and roll-o-matic? Those will make it somewhat more worth your money and time. Or maybe it's wide front. Some like wide fronts and some say that a wide front alone is worth a $1000. But of course that depends on what you like. Another thing you might want to consider is what do you plan to do with it, use it for a work machine or just as a "green queen" to show. Some people I know have fixed up "green queens" by dumping in way more money then those machines will ever return. I would think that you would offer a low amount if it's to be a work machine, but offer a bit more if you plan to make a "green queen". I have a 1955 50 with the 3 options I mentioned above and bought it about 12 years ago (also came with a 45 loader) and the whole outfit was $1000. It was in running order with 3 new tires, but not cosmetically pretty. I use it for some work and some fun and don't intend to ever make it into a "green queen".

Hi Again Guys,

No, I don't do the "pretty little tractor" thing.

I just like old tractors on my place. So, I gather you think a price of around 1K is still okay for this old darlin' (it has a single front)?

Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it.

Allan

Heck, if she's straight and complete, she'd be worth $500 just to put in your yard! Lance

I'd buy it but I won't use blaster I go get a few cans of turpentine and fill every thing with that you would be surprised to see what parts look like after you have socked them in turpentine for a day or so it eats rust better then any thing else I have tryed and I've been working on engines for more the 25 years

well with out seeing it I can't say if it isn't stuck which it may not be I'd add a couple hundred but I'd say from what you have said I'd give up to around $750 theres enough parts to get 3 times that back by parting it out

R-Marg,

Yep, I'm with you on that score. I use it too.

The thing I'm fighting with myself over is the price. Right now that tractor is nothing more than a hunk of iron with the parts all assembled in the correct order.

Fortunately, money is really not an issue with me, but I'm not a damned fool either.

I'm thinking that this old gal, after setting all this time in one spot, is worth about $300 tops just because it is still correct and straight.....am I wrong on that call?

Allan,

Tractors are always worth very little when one is buying and a fortune when one is selling. If it is as straight as you say, the hood and nose alone are worth more than that $300.00. I think you are looking for an early Christmas present. In my opinion, to be fair you shouldn't offer less than it is worth for parts (have you checked the price of parts lately?).

My thought would also be to first talk to him and ask him what he will take. From there you can get a feeling if the purchase is doable or the the person is fishing and thinks that any ole piece of iron with green on is gold underneath. You never know.

Allan,

figure worst case scenario and get a price overhaul the engine, electrical system, hydraulics, new tires, 1/2 the tranny...if you price these parts/labor out, then that will be worth more than the tractor, so, offer 300-500...or ask hin what he wants, then show the parts list if he offer is more than you want.

I know the 50 is waiting for you...also, go buy a couple of cases of BP Blaster, DW-40 and upgrade your torch/heating system just to start talking

Hi Tom,

Maybe I should just go buy a couple of cases of PBR and forget this nonsense!! LOL

I know every damned bolt in 'er will have to be repaired....huge undertaking.

It just kinda breaks my heart to see that old gal just sittin' there, forgotten and ignored for so long.

Thanks for the comeback,

Allan
