Would it be different or a disgrace to paint an A JD a sceme other than original. I pull an A and there are several others who do also, and I dont want my tractor to look like just another A. I am a very outgoing and outspoken person and I want a tractor that is the same. I have thought about reversing the colors and painting the body and frame yellow and having green decals and wheels but am afraid the wheels will look terrible green. I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback as to what yall think. The A is not going to be original so you might as well help me out whether you think it is right or not. Thanks in advance!!! By the way green and yellow dont have to be the only options as long as it will look good.

Might as well weigh in with an opinion here.

Go with a mediun, near the original Deere color, metal flake. Throw on some flames coming from the radiator back in Yellow metal flake with with a dark Green outline. Use the metal flake yellow on the rims and maybe some of the dark green pin stripes around the rim.

Would look pretty much like then standard paint scheme, but still stand out. Add some chrome to some trim pieces and that would even stand out better.

Did a little looking and GM had a medium Green Metalic in late 70's early 80's that would look pretty good. Go to Dupont Automotive finished and get to the color chip pages on line. Choose GM from and around the late 1970 period and you will find it. Had a cousin that had a late 70's pickup in that color that looked pretty close.

How about wearing a green and yellow dress while driving? How's that for being flamboyant and an attention getter?

Hey Man, how about painting the frame rails and frame yellow with a narrow green stripe down the center of each rail. paint the wheel hubs green and the rims yellow. And if you can, keep the engine and componets green. I think maybe keep the body green but get creative with some yellow pinstripping and decaling. That is if you are wanting to stick with oringal colors. what ever you do though keep her pretty. just some suggestions. take care.

How about some clear coat with big metal flakes in it, some flames ect. Go to the picture section of the hook magazine and look at some of the tractors over there, lots of deeres with black stripes down the middel ect. You could also use new style decals and go that route-it looks nice as well.

There is a time and a place for the correct police. I always like to know what SHOULD be there, and these are the people who know. I appreciate that someone is keeping track of history before the langoliers eat it up, and the details are lost forever. However, my own personal tractors are not brought back to original specifications. Instead, they are made to function properly, and then tidied up a bit. If the incorrect parts don't hinder the performance of the tractor, I leave them alone. Each new addition or change has a reason, and a story behind it. Many of these stories will never be known, but keeping the tractor in the modified state is similar to having a book with the tractor's history written in it, but the book has a lock on the cover. It may never be opened, but to know that it is there is as intriguing as the cornerstone of an old building. Someday, someone may be able to recognize that modification, and tell you why it was done. If you change it, that opportunity may be lost. To me, this is what gives each tractor a unique personality. You may have guessed my answer by now. Do what you want to it. In another 50 years, it will have its own unique story to tell.

As far as recommendations, I don't have any, since, to me, nothing looks better than that green and yellow tractor!

I've seen a JD 60 at pulls in the Finger Lakes of New York State that is painted I-H red and even has the I-H decals on it. To each his own.

How about painting that A of yours JD Industrial yellow?

Have you seen the new John Deere hats with the green and yellow flames. Maybe you could do something like that on the tank since it has an unstyled front end.

Good luck,
Dave

There used to be an unstyled A that was painted pink with white wheels. The way it sounded, and pulled, I think it was a mite more than stock. I believe it even said "Jane Deere" on the hood. Go for it, and good luck in the pulls. Dale

The hood on my A is mostly black. I 100% agree that it is nice to have a tractor that doesnt look like the rest. Its really fun to screw with the correct police when they want to hang you because you dare do something besides build a stock tractor and paint it green and yellow. Sometime in the future on mine I want to paint it a dark metal flake green.

However, the funniest paint job on a Deere I have ever saw was gold with a white stripe down the hood and it said "STAG" where it used to say "John Deere". Somehow I get the feeling a few 12pks of Stag were involved with that paint job :-)

Email me and I can send you some pics of JD's that arent just green so you can get some ideas.

I used to travel a lot with my job and in Washington state (near Moses Lake) I came across two farms that repainted ALL their equipment. One farm had all brown machinery and the other had all white. Brand new equipment was completely repainted before hitting the dirt. Why? I don't know. I guess to each his own.

I can't think that repainting your rig would be any different. Didn't Deere do the same thing with their "Patio" garden tractors in the '60s that were painted blue, yellow, and red? I would say go for it.

I used to see a JD 4430 (it was in the early '70s, and I think that's what it was) at tractor pulls in Wyoming, Iowa. It was owned by Ernie Ropp, the owner of the John Deere dealership in Kalona, Iowa. He was a big, imposing man with a full head of snow white hair. His tractor was as white as his hair.

A great looking tractor, for sure, and he did pretty well in the pulls.

Stan

I have read about a G that is well known in the pulling circles that is painted black. I think I have seen a picture of it, but can't remember for sure. If its a pulling tractor make it the way that works and paint it the way you like.

i believe i'd keep the right paint scheme and embleish it with some art work of some kind - like a picture of it pulling a sled painted on the hood. i know flames are old school, but what better on an old tractor? i saw a sign on a puller one time that said:
when i was young and lean
i use to plow all the time
now that i'm old and lean
i'm still a mean mochine

I used to drive by a farm with a pink tractor. It had the correct decals. I always asked myself, it it the wife's tractor, or does she rule the roost? Never did see anyone one it, at least not in the daytime.

If the tractor you seen was south of Stanton Nebraska, I think it was a 4450 John Deere. The reason it was pink is that the wife sold Mary Kay cosmetics and she always had to have a pink caddy, so the husband decided to have his tractor painted pink. chris
