I'm wondering how to set the left and right markers on this planter so that they go up and down the way you want them to. There is a small chain which attaches to a lever on the hitch pin which is supposed to raise and lower the markers, but I'm not familiar with this system. Any help appreciated.

I use a JD 290 planter for small wildlife food plots. It is in good shape and does a nice job. I have the original manual which shows how to set the markers up The arm at the hitch must be assembled at a 90 degree angle to the hitch. The markers work good. Also the earlier comment about plugging up the shoes applies to the JD planter as well. You can"t back up or dirt ill plug the shoe. If you are interested in the manual I could scan it and email it to you.

We purchased a 290 at a farm sale to use to put out some food plots for wildlife. And being hobby farmers do not know a darn thing about how it works. We are having trouble getting the gear box to engage. If you would want to share your manual, we would be every so grateful.

Thanks alot.
Kenny

lots of luck on those chains. when i was a kid running an ac planter like the 290 if you ever let the tractor and planter roll backwards at the end of a row it would stop the shoes up. i don't know if jds are like that or not but if you start having problems with the shoes stopping up - don't roll backwards.

Art, its been a longgggg gg time since I used those but did enjoy adjusting them so they actually worked. As I recall, theres are 2 chains with springs up to the 2 sides of that lil crossbar that mounts near the hitch pin. What it does is when you turn one way and raise the planter BOTH markers are raised and the one sides spring n chain tightens (depending which way you turned) so it engages the chain stopper up on the planter sides so that chain CAN NOT EXTEND OUT therefore, the chain on the opposite side is free to extend out n drop that sides marker down by gravity when the planter is lowered.

Something like that lol. What often happened is the chains or springs werent properly adjusted and/or the side chain stops didnt work so when the planter was lowered either or both markers tried to fall and it ended up neither all the way down.

Sorry, thats the best I have to offer.
