I have a 53 JD 40T. When running in 3rd & 4th gear, there is a very noticable gear whine. I have put 140wt lube in the final gears. I have had 140wt in the transmission, put have gone back to 90wt, but still have a gear whine. Does anyone have a solution for this problem. It isn't put ear muffs on either. I am looking the correct fix.

Thanks

No there are no more new gears out there ,but you can find good gears out there ,I have a good third gear slider, no you probably cant see if its good or bad but you can slide it on the shaft an check play most of he time I have found the people parting out still have the shaft to check it with. I have had them sound like it was going to blow the trans from below me in third and fourth I chaced the noise also till I pulled my hair out. I have fixed 4 model 4o and 2 M this way. it takes about 3 hours to change them , I have more # of people who might have gears also ,Its worth one shot the more slope in the slider the more tooth slap you get(thus noise)

Guys,

I remember someone posting a question about second gear on a dubuque [an MT, and since i have one, i read it]. Clooney said to engage the PTO and see if the noise changes any? I can not remember what the significance was, but maybe some of you guys out there may know. Also, isn't the PTO on the 40 live? If so, the test may not be able to yield the same results...perhaps someone out there will know what Clooney was trying to test?

I have too have a 1953 Model 40 T and my third gear sounds like it is coming out of the case. It makes a similiar noise in forth gear but not nearly as loud as third. I guess we are in the same boat just turn your MP3 Player up a little louder when mowing that is what I do.

Have a great day,
Dave

As long as the whine isn't caused by a failed/failing bearing etc. The most practical choice is to learn to like the sound(s) of straight cut gears.

Can you tell if first gear is making it also ,and you might get the the tractor set level set the brake on one side and raise the other side , remove the gear shifter and try to move the top two shafts to see how much play there is ,around 4thou.I think ,and check for slop in the three gears that slide back and fourth there should not be alot of slack in them , third is the closet to the motor and fourth/first is the next, with the wheel off ground turn the trans to line the gears up with correct cluster gear and you can check the slack between the gears.alot of times the noise it between the gears (not always) but third is the most used on the four sp. trans.

Did it just start whining or has it done it for eons? To me that is a key for the Dubuques.

If it has done it for ever, you usually can change about everything and it will seem to make the same noise. The gears seem to get into their own syndrome and then if you put new bearings in it just changes the pattern on the teeth and on and on for me. I will never chase another noise in a Dubuque tranny/fial drives unless it just jumps up out of the clear blue.

As mentioned by Henry J. and B&D, if the bearings and tolerances are ok, then forget it. I recently spent over $1500 on bearings, seals, shafts and replacement gears, trying to stop the whine in a 430.
The noise was just as loud as before, maybe just a different pitch.
There is no such thing as buying new gears, so how can you tell that donor gears are ok? You can"t by looking at them.
As HJ said, I will never chase a gear whine again, just buy one that is quiet to begin with.
