Do you know if there is an alternate source for lye? I have looked in all of the hardware stores around here and no one carries the Red Devil brand of lye. In fact I can"t find any lye. I did some looking on the net and found that a lot of places are pulling lye off of the shelves on account of the Meth Heads. Seems lye is one of the chemicals that can be used for making meth! I went to Red Devils web site to see if they would show who I could order it from and they don"t even show that product. I would appreciate any advise that you can offer.

 Lye in a spray can in reply to Ron (N. AZ), 04-09-2006 18:12:51
I have found you can go to the dollar store and get those $1 cans of oven cleaner and get the same results. Basically lye gravy in a spray can. If sprayed on and let soak overnight it will remove the paint back down to the original casting primer. Works wonders on grease. Better not put it on anything painted you don"t plan to repaint and don"t put it on aluminum. Tends to eat it.

John - Thanks. I'll check the local dollar store and see what they carry. Anything would be better than a wire brush :>}

i do home repair work and went in a grocery store to get 6 gallons of clorox to do some pressure washing with and the store manager had to approve the sale before the clerk would ring it up. seems like if you buy more than 2 gallons they think your using it to make meth. whats the world coming to? any amish people around you? they may have some lye they would sell you.

In the Phoenix metro area there was a push to have all O.T.C. medicine that has Sudafed in it put behind the counter and you have to sign for it. Not sure where they're at with it thought. I'm sure if it gets pushed through down there it will only be a matter of time before its that way in the rest of Arizona. Not sure where the world is headed but seems the meth heads are having a big influence on the direction. Unfortunately there aren't any Amish in this part of the country. Going to look at Home Depot for the Roebic brand next time I'm in there. If not, I'll look into buying it in bulk from a soap making outfit.

Thanks for the reply fellows. Like you TDK I found several sites related to soap making that listed placed to buy 40 or 50 lb bags of lye flakes. I just didn't wan't to buy that much at one time. I'm sure it's alot cheaper thought. F-I-T I didn't notice the Roebic brand at Homedepot when I was in there looking for the Red Devil Brand. Next time I'm back in there I'll see if they carry it. I quess if all else fails I'll resort to buying bulk. Thanks for the help.

I ran into the same problem about a month ago. Grocery stores no longer stocking Red Devil lye. It can still be bought by mail order though. I did a web search for "lye" and found that there are people that still make lye soap, as a hobby I guess. That search also listed suppliers for the lye. I bought 40 lbs. last week. Buying in bulk plus shipping is also cheaper than the store price was.

Ron:

For the purpose of making lye gravy, you can substitute Drano Crystal Drain Opener. It has a few pieces of Magnesium in it that makes it "special", or at least the Drano folks thought so. It will work fine.

Now as to finding lye, I found a product at Home Depot and Lowe's in the plumbing department that is called Crystal Drain Opener, and it is made by Roebic. Their description says it is 100% Caustic Soda (NaOH), otherwise known as lye.

I have had no problems finding this stuff at the home supply centers and DIY centers.

Hey Frank, have you ever tried using wood ashes instead of lye?

I know you can produce crude NaOH from hardwood ashes, but I've never taken the time to brew it. It's always been easier for me to just buy it.
