JD 435 Air Filter Question

I recently bought a 1959 435 Diesel. The manuals say this has an oil bath filter system like many tractors. However this tractor has a JD AT20728/Wix 42222 Dry Filter in the stack like is listed for a 2020. Was this an option on the 435 or did someone just retrofit? Is the dry filter a better system than the oil bath? With this dry filter system in the 2020 was there any oil in the air filter cup or was it run completely dry? Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

It appears to be the stock air filter housing. Whoever did it did a nice job. It still has the oil bath cup on the bottom and air intake up through the hood. Uses a Wix 42222/Napa 2222/JD AT20728 filter. Has a wingnut on the bottom to hold the filter in and a rubber cup that goes in the bottom stating to not use oil and clean out any dirt that is present. This is a tractor my dad originally bought around 1965, we sold in 1986 and I just bought back. He says it was a dry filter system when he purchased the tractor in '65 and it was noted on the operator's manual as such in pencil. As long as it filters as good or better than the oil bath I will leave it in place.

If the 2020 dry aircleaner looks factory and not like a "farmer fix". Then just keep using it. I converted my 435's oilbath to a dry filter inside the factory canister. A slight amount of oil in the bottom is not required but it will help show dirt if for some reason the paper filter was ruined. Is the bottom of the aircleaner solid without holes or ports? Somebody may have used the 2020 filter inside the 435 aircleaner instead of swapping the entire aircleaner.
