4320 starting problem

I have a 4320, when I go to start it, it turns over very slow. It acts like a bad battery. I've changed battery cables, fairly new batterys, rebuilt starter, but no change in the way it acts. If I try jumping it, it helps some but not enough to start it. I have been hearing a hum in what I believe is the hydraulic pump. Could this be the culprit? Once I do get the tractor started it seems to run just fine, except for the hum once in a while in the hydraulic pump. Anyone have any ideas?

My ignition switch has been acting funny, does'nt want to spring back and has been very stiff. I wonder if this may be sticking in the start position when the tractor is running, causing the batteries to drain. Any one ever have this problem?

I have a JD 1020 1970 model gas engine. I have a similar starting problem. New battery, new cable wires, clamps, etc. If you get it jumped off, it runs good. Then it may or not crank the next time. Its like it has a short somewhere draining the batteries we've put in the thing.
Did the steering wheel idea help? I'll try that if I can get it jumped off tomorrow.

Just checking that you do know about turning the steering wheel back and forth while cranking it to relieve hyd. pump pressure buildup?
