I'm getting ready to paint my 3020 and I'm wondering about the quality of the "cheap" brands of paint such as you can find at TSC or Fleet Farm. I'll be painting this tractor not to show, but just to make it more visually pleasing while doing light work around the farm. I've seen some tractors come up at auction where the green has turned to a sickly blue-turquoise. Is that what I could expect from these generic types of paint, or should I spend a few extra bucks and get it at JD dealer?

mother deere, ag & ce&c green is the right shade of paint for any 20 series tractor, get yourself some jd thinner also and hardener if you want shine. then go to a auto parts store and get a mixing cup or two, mix it 4to1to1 just like the scale on the cup, you will do fine if you have painted at all,and have fun.

To me it's worth a few extra dollars to have good paint. In your case probably the jd green from the dealer is a choice you will be glad you made. Also, if your tractor was built after 1960 then you do not want "classic" green. I restored my grandfather's 70 gas. Not knowing what some paints will do, a year or so later I bought a can of jd spray paint from my local hardware store to "touch up" some bolts and scratches. Big mistake! Within a few months the areas I had touched up were turning blue-green. I learned my lesson. Now I buy it from the dealer.

I painted some implements fo a neighbor and he picked up paint at T S C . I used hardner and it looked good for about three years. Now it has changed to a blueish instead of green. I think it has been about 7 years now.

Also you can do a search in the paint section of this board. Many times this has been discussed. Also there are some real sharp guys over there.

Henry: Thanks for the catch. I only paint 2 cylinders so that is all I deal with. That new generation stuff is way to new for me. The last tractor we had was a 2010. Now all I have are 2 cylinders. How much does the PPG cost per gallon? I just bought Martin Senour for a '53 Farmall Cub that I restored and the gallon of paint, pint of hardner and gallon of medium reducer was $194.00 But boy does she shine. Mark

Check on the color, I don't think it is classic green that you want to put on that new generation tractor.

Personally, I am switching to something like the Omni in PPG, what is a couple of twenties when you have to look at it all day long. I have used the Omni on the neighbors 4240 and it went on great laid down flat and was harder than wood peckers lips.

You can buy Classic Green at Mother Deere for $42.00 a gallon. Add a pint of hardner and you have a nice paint job. TSC paints have what I call chalking. They are self cleaning but after a couple of years, you will see the difference.
