I am helping a guy with a 38 D and my newer IT manual (jd-4) is for a,b,g,h,d,m. But the D isn't until 143,000 serial number and later. The tractor we are working on is I believe 138,000 era. Will it still work for engine repair? Or how much different is there in Specs? Does someone make or have a manual that covers older model D's? I have a 29 that I wouldn't mind having some info on myself. Thanks

So is the sfm116 and the f116 the same? Is one the original number and one the reprint? Thanks Guys for the help!

In addition to Glen's nice response, Deere published a Service Manual about 1929 which covered the D, GP, and E engines. The only identification is F116 printed on the lower left hand corner of the cover. Reprints are available - Green Magazine used to have them, and they are on eBay.

I have the copy of book Duane is talking about also. Mine was a reprint with no number on it but I think JD has it available again for about $40- $50 ?? Usually why I forget to mention it because of it's price. Still a good book if you are interested in the early D , GP or E engines and also has interesting trouble shooting chart, lube chart, belt pulley calculations, and plow hitch recommendation. Should find it at JD Publications by entering D and exact model search and under unstyled D listing see " SMF116 -- D,GP,E Tractors & Engines". It doesn't list parts but only service and about 79 pages. Thanks for reminding us about it Duane.

jas, That I&T JD-4 manual will work fine for that 38 D. That 38 has the same engine and trans as a 53 D. Same specs, block, head, governor as a styled D but maybe different pistons, different radiator and sheet metal. The trans case is different on back of styled for hitch and brakes but guts are the same. For the 38 get a copy of DIR225 Instructions and repairs (operators manual) and it covers 31-38 D & some repairs also. PC658 Parts catalog covers the unstyled D 24-38. PC659 parts catalog covers the styled D 39-53 and is handy to have also if you can afford as then you can see what other parts will interchange. For your 29 and 24-30 D you might also want a copy of DIR108 and DIR3C. Your 29 is a lot different than later Ds but does have 6 3/4" bore. The 28 to 30 have more things in common. Manuals are available from JD publications on paper or CD and from other vendors also. Your JD dealer can get manuals or call 800-522-7448 or from JD site.
