I have a JD 420, not sure what year but I think it is a "59". The power steering and hydraulics are messed up. Steering turns fine one way but no power the other, and no power to the three pnt. hitch. Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem. Thanks

The parts books plainly shows several different seperate pumps for the various 420 models power steering. I don't know if these are added later to the books, but they are in there. The best thing you can buy is a PARTS BOOK they are between $30--$40

I dont recall any seperate steering pump on these tractors when they were new but I well remember the flow divider valve that never worked properly from day one. It was a shuttle type valve that was supposed to supply oil on demand, from the main pump, to the steering, rockshaft or remote valve. This valve was updated by the company, did not help much. There was also a check valve in the rockshaft valve housing that gave loads of trouble. It was updated at least twice. This did help if the flow divider let the oil get back that far. They had cork seals on the inlet line that would dry out and allow air to enter the system, noise and more problems. It sounds like your steering valve may have a broken spring, binding sleeve, or the steering shaft moving fore and aft rather than properly actuating the valve. Maybe the seperate pump was the answer to having both power steering and a rockshaft that worked. They were made 1956-58. It has been 40 years my brain may be fuzzy. I thing I would start with the flow divider first.

One thing for sure they aren't related. The PS has a added on pump with a small reservior on top although it is Deere. The 3pt is run off a gear drive pump on the front of engine.Have you checked the oil level in the lift ? It is checked in the under seat area, use 10w30 motor oil in it.Some of these tractors have a flow divider valve for the steering that could be stuck on one side.
